One election result moved Brazil’s currency further in a day than it moved in the whole week before. For foreign residents, the effect shows up first in the monthly budget.

Key Facts

  • The move Brazil’s central bank PTAX rate (the official reference rate) fell to 4.9859 reais per US dollar on Monday 5 October 2026, from 5.2238 on Friday 2 October. That is a fall of about 4.6% in the dollar rate.
  • The trigger Flávio Bolsonaro finished first in the 4 October first round with 47.03% of valid votes, against 45.16% for President Lula, according to the electoral court (TSE). They meet in a runoff on Sunday 25 October.
  • Why it matters to you If you earn in US dollars, the same dollars buy fewer reais than a week ago. If you pay for imports or travel in dollars, local prices may ease over time.
  • Prediction markets Polymarket prices a Bolsonaro win at 83.5% and Lula at 16.5%; Kalshi shows 84.0% and 16.0% (6 October, 00:47 ET). These are bets, not polls.
  • Still open Whether the move lasts through a three-week runoff campaign.

What Happened to the Real

The PTAX fixing was 4.9859 reais to sell on Monday 5 October. It was 5.2238 on Friday 2 October. The fall is 4.6% for the dollar rate.

The week before had been calm. The fixings were 5.2132 on Monday 28 September, 5.2204, 5.1809, 5.2079 and 5.2238. Monday’s 4.9859 is the first fixing below 5.00 in that series.

PTAX is an average of four windows during the day. Market quotes at the close can differ slightly, so we use PTAX for every conversion below.

The session read
The Ibovespa rose 7.70%, with breadth negative — 7 of 15 names higher. Materials led, while Consumer Disc. lagged.

Why the Real Rallied

Brazil voted on Sunday 4 October. The TSE finished its count at 2:58 a.m. on Monday: Bolsonaro had 56,104,503 votes (47.03% of valid votes) and Lula 53,879,538 (45.16%).

Several pre-election polls had shown Lula ahead. Brazilian market reports read the result as a higher chance of a change of government in January 2027. The Ibovespa, São Paulo’s main stock index, gained 7.70% on Monday to a record close of 206,912 points, according to B3.

That is a market reading of politics, not a verdict on either candidate. Our runoff explainer covers the vote itself.

What This Means for Foreign Residents

Dollar earners. US$2,000 a month was R$10,448 at Friday’s PTAX and is R$9,972 at Monday’s. That is R$476 less, or about US$95 at today’s rate.

Rent and bills in reais. A R$5,000 rent costs about US$1,003 at 4.9859, against about US$957 at 5.2238. The rent has not changed. Your dollars simply buy less of it.

Imports and travel. A stronger real makes dollar-priced goods and flights cheaper in reais. Shops often adjust prices slowly, so the effect can take weeks.

Moving money. Swings of this size within one day are rare. Some people split large transfers into several steps; that is a personal choice, not advice.

The Other Direction

Currencies often overshoot after a political surprise and then settle. A narrowing in runoff polls could take back part of Monday’s move. The Copom, the central bank committee that sets the Selic (Brazil’s benchmark interest rate), meets on 3 and 4 November, after the runoff.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket prices Flávio Bolsonaro at 83.5% and Lula at 16.5% to win the presidency, with US$173.98 million traded. Kalshi, regulated in the US by the CFTC (Commodity Futures Trading Commission), shows 84.0% and 16.0%, with 4.52 million contracts traded. Stand: 6 October 2026, 00:47 ET. These prices are bets, not polls.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What Is Not Yet Known

We do not know how voters of the other candidates, who together took 7.81% of valid votes, will split in the runoff. We also do not know whether the real holds below 5.00 once the first excitement fades. The TSE’s count is final for the first round, but the runoff is a different contest.

Flávio Bolsonaro finished first in the 4 October first round with 47.03% of valid votes, ahead of Lula at 45.16%, according to the TSE. Several polls had expected Lula ahead, and Brazilian market reports read the result as a higher chance of a change of government.

What does a stronger real mean for foreigners living in Brazil?
