Costa Rica Culture in One Page

Costa Rica culture in October 2026 runs on a small stage with big exports: a Cannes prize, Latin Grammy nominees and two UNESCO-listed treasures. The capital, San José, holds the National Theatre, the National Museum and most of the year’s big events.

Jorge Rodríguez Vives leads the Ministry of Culture and Youth. La Nación reported on 22 September 2026 that he presented its 2027 budget to lawmakers.

The ministry hands out the National Culture Prizes, and Teletica published the winners’ list on 12 February 2026. The ceremony took place at the National Theatre on 5 May 2026, with Rodríguez presenting the awards, La Nación reported.

New readers can start with the Costa Rica country page and our guide to Costa Rica culture, language and traditions. The sections below name the people behind the headlines.

  • Capital: San José, home of the National Theatre (opened 1897) and the National Museum.
  • Culture minister: Jorge Rodríguez Vives, Ministry of Culture and Youth (October 2026).
  • Top honour: the Magón National Culture Prize, presented to artist Otto Apuy on 5 May 2026.
  • Press freedom: 38th of 180 countries in the 2026 Reporters Without Borders index.

Music, From Latin Grammy Nominees to the Concert Hall

Debi Nova, a Costa Rican singer-songwriter, received her sixth Latin Grammy nomination on 16 September 2026. She is up for Best Contemporary Pop Album for Todo puede convertirse en canción, according to La Nación.

The Latin Grammy gala is on 12 November 2026 at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas. Newcomer Kendall Peña is also nominated, for Best New Artist.

Nova’s Track Record and the Studio Crew

Nova was nominated earlier for the album Soy in 2014 and for 3:33 in 2020. Two Costa Rican sound engineers, Paul Rubinstein and Erick Román, won a Latin Grammy that year for their work on 3:33.

The Estela Awards and the Local Charts

At the Estela awards gala in Guatemala on 19 September 2026, Costa Rica had 26 nominations across salsa, metal, jazz, gospel, pop and regional music. Kei leads the Costa Rican field with six nominations, according to Delfino.cr.

Kavvo was due to receive an award as the most played artist in Costa Rica in 2025. Other Costa Rican acts at the Guatemala events included Gazel, Niah, Ken Keiter and Sergio Jaén, according to Delfino.cr.

Orchestras and Composers

The National Symphony Orchestra plays its eleventh season concert at the National Theatre on 13 November 2026, with guest conductor Pedro Oliveira Neves. Composer Eddie Mora won the 2025 composition prize for Ecos del Guernica.

Percussionist Ricardo Alvarado won the performance prize for Trópico Timpani Concerto. The National Band of Guanacaste plays a Fiesta de Música y Mascaradas at the theatre on 31 October 2026.

The Autumn Calendar

The National Theatre also hosts a Martes Lírico opera evening on 3 November 2026. The Latin Grammy gala follows on 12 November, where Debi Nova and Kendall Peña will learn their results.

Visiting stars add to the mix, such as the Omar Courtz concert on 21 November 2026 at Parque Viva. The National Museum’s October 2026 programme lists conferences on 8, 15 and 22 October and a concert on 25 October.

Writers and the Book Fair

Carmen Lyra, the pen name of María Isabel Carvajal, is the classic name in Costa Rican letters. Born in San José’s Barrio Amón around 1887, she published Los cuentos de mi tía Panchita in 1920, which brought her international recognition.

Lyra was also a teacher, a co-founder of the children’s paper San Selerín in 1912, and a Communist Party member from 1931. She helped create the Patronato Nacional de la Infancia and died in exile in Mexico after the civil war, according to Semanario Universidad.

The 2025 National Culture Prizes for literature, handed out in May 2026, show who writes now. Five authors took the genre awards:

The International Book Fair

The 24th Costa Rica International Book Fair ran from 22 to 30 August 2026 at the Antigua Aduana in San José. An executive agreement of 21 May 2026, signed by Rodríguez, declared it of cultural interest but granted no money.

  • Novel: Rodolfo Arias, Mamá tiene cien años.
  • Poetry: José Ricardo Chaves, Escribir hasta el fin del mundo.
  • Short story: Isabel Gamboa, Llegaron las visitas.
  • Drama: Antonio Yglesias, Las hormigas y otras piezas.
  • Essay: María Bonilla, Desde la buhardilla de lo femenino 2.

Film and the Big Screen

Valentina Maurel leads the film story of 2026. Her second feature, Siempre soy tu animal materno, won the Best Actress award in the Un Certain Regard section at Cannes in May 2026.

The prize was shared by its three leads: Daniela Marín, Mariangel Villegas and Mexican actress Marina de Tavira. La Nación calls it the first Costa Rican film to win that acting prize.

Maurel and the Festival Circuit

Maurel holds French and Costa Rican nationality, and her earlier film Tengo sueños eléctricos is among the most awarded Costa Rican features. La Nación lists prizes in Switzerland, Spain, Luxembourg, Argentina and India, and a best Latin American film award at San Sebastián in 2022.

Siempre soy tu animal materno opened its section at the San Sebastián festival in September 2026. Ariel Escalante’s Domingo y la niebla, in 2022, was the first Costa Rican film in a Cannes official section, according to CRHoy.

New Names and the Prize Winners

Felipe Vega Con, 28, won a category at the Santiago Wild festival in Chile in May 2026. His short film was shot in the Sarapiquí forests.

The Budget Fight Over the Film Festival

Maurel warned in a September 2026 interview that a proposed 70% cut would hurt the Costa Rica International Film Festival, known as CRFIC. The proposed 2027 budget is CRC 45 million (about US$99,000), against CRC 159 million (about US$349,000) in 2026.

She said the film fund behind Tengo sueños eléctricos helped draw more than US$400,000 in foreign capital. Figures use about 456 colones to the US dollar in October 2026.

Art, Museums and Heritage

Otto Apuy, an artist from Guanacaste, received the Magón prize on 5 May 2026 for the depth and continuity of his work. He said he had long wanted Guanacaste to win a Magón, according to La Nación.

The Visual Arts prizes named Laura Astorga for two-dimensional work and José Daniel Gómez for three-dimensional work. Aysha Morales and Lucía Levy won in the other-media category, and Florentino Hernández Hernández took the intangible heritage prize.

The Stone Spheres of the Diquís

UNESCO lists four archaeological sites in the Diquís Delta in southern Costa Rica: Finca 6, Batambal, El Silencio and Grijalba-2. The chiefdom settlements date from about AD 500 to 1500, and the stone spheres measure 0.7 to 2.57 metres across.

The National Museum, beside the Plaza de la Democracia, lists a second alignment of the spheres with the sun at Finca 6 in 2026. It also opened an exhibition on El Guarco, covering about 10,000 years of history.

The Painted Oxcart

UNESCO proclaimed the oxherding and oxcart tradition in 2005 and inscribed it on its list in 2008. Oxcarts once carried coffee from the Central Valley to Puntarenas on the Pacific coast, a trip of ten to fifteen days.

Painting the carts began in the early twentieth century, and each region had its own designs. UNESCO says the number of trained builders and decorators has declined sharply.

Sport Icons and the World Cup Miss

Keylor Navas, a three-time Champions League winner with Real Madrid, is the goalkeeper who captains Costa Rica’s national team. He announced his retirement from the national team on 23 May 2024, yet captained the side in the 2026 World Cup qualifying campaign.

A 0-0 draw with Honduras in San José on 18 November 2025 left Costa Rica out of the 2026 World Cup, according to El Observador. Navas wrote that the squad could not give Costa Rica the satisfaction of living another World Cup.

Media and the Press

Costa Rica ranks 38th of 180 countries in the 2026 press freedom index of Reporters Without Borders, down from 36th in 2025. The group says ownership is concentrated among a few conglomerates, which limits pluralism.

Its country page also says the previous Chaves administration restricted access to public information. It notes frequent verbal attacks on critical outlets and journalists.

The Interferencia Banner

The team of Interferencia, part of Radios UCR at the University of Costa Rica, won the Pío Víquez journalism prize for investigations into sexual abuse. On stage, the team unfurled a banner saying independent press does not stay silent, whoever the aggressor is, La Nación reported.

Fundación SONAR won the cultural communication prize. Teletica and La Nación both published the full winners’ list.

What Costa Rica Culture Says About the Country

The culture prizes and the book fair show a state that backs the arts through prizes and formal declarations. The film budget fight shows that the money behind them is contested.

The people honoured include a Guanacaste artist, a university radio team and the craft makers behind the oxcart, not only celebrities. Regional and public-interest voices sit next to the stars.

Politics and culture overlap, as they did for Carmen Lyra a century ago. For more, read who holds power in Costa Rica, people and culture and religion and culture.

What It Means for US Readers

Visitors can see most of this in San José. The National Theatre lists visitor hours of 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

The National Museum is open Tuesday to Saturday from 8:30 a.m. and Sunday from 9:00 a.m., and closed on Mondays. American fans can follow Debi Nova and Kendall Peña at the Latin Grammys on 12 November 2026.

Business readers can read the culture story next to who runs Costa Rica’s economy. The film budget figures above use the October 2026 exchange rate.

What Is Not Known

The size of the 2027 film festival budget is still open, because the CRC 45 million (about US$99,000) figure is a proposal. Debi Nova’s and Kendall Peña’s Latin Grammy results come on 12 November 2026.

Whether Navas plays for Costa Rica again before the 2030 World Cup cycle has not been announced. No US release date for Maurel’s new film has been published.
