The Chile holidays of December and January reshape the calendar for anyone visiting Santiago or the coast this summer. Three public holidays fall between Tuesday 8 December 2026 and Friday 1 January 2027, and two of them close most shops.

For a US visitor, the useful news is simple: book transport and dinners early, and do your shopping the day before. Chile is in high summer in December and January, so hotels and buses fill fast around these days.

Why Chile Holidays Matter to Visitors

Chile holidays are legal days off for most workers, and the country keeps a short list of fixed dates each year. Two of the three dates in this guide are also so-called irrenunciables, a Spanish term meaning the day cannot be waived by the worker.

For shop staff, an irrenunciable holiday means the employer may not require them to work, under Law 19.973. In practice, supermarkets, department stores and malls close their doors, the Dirección del Trabajo (Chile’s labour directorate) says.

Christmas and New Year are the two days in this guide that carry that status. The Immaculate Conception on Tuesday 8 December is an ordinary public holiday under Law 2.977, so it does not carry the same shop-staff rule.

The Three Dates at a Glance

The first of the Chile holidays is Tuesday 8 December 2026, the Immaculate Conception, a Catholic feast that is a national holiday in Chile. It falls midweek, and the official calendar lists no extra day off for Monday 7 December, so it does not create a long weekend.

The second is Friday 25 December 2026, Christmas Day, which gives Chile a long weekend from Friday 25 to Sunday 27 December. It is the only long weekend left in 2026, because the other remaining holidays land on weekends.

The third of the Chile holidays is Friday 1 January 2027, New Year, with a second long weekend from Friday 1 to Sunday 3 January. It is also a day that shop staff cannot be required to work.

Thursday 24 December and Thursday 31 December are ordinary working days, but the rest period for shop staff starts early. Under Law 19.973, commerce workers must leave work by 20:00 on both evenings, so expect shops to shut around then.

What Closes and What Stays Open

On Friday 25 December and Friday 1 January, supermarkets, large stores and packaged-goods convenience shops must stay shut, the Dirección del Trabajo says. Restaurants, cinemas, nightclubs, casinos, emergency pharmacies, fuel stations and airport shops are exempt and may open.

Small neighbourhood shops can also open when the owners or their direct family members serve the customers. Hotels and many restaurants stay open with reduced staff, so check the hours of any place you plan to visit.

Law 21.791 of December 2025 restored the year-end bank holiday, so branches closed to the public on 31 December 2025, the financial regulator CMF says. Thursday 31 December 2026 is likely the same, while online banking and cash machines keep working.

Planning Around the Long Weekends

Santiago empties out on Chile holidays that make long weekends, because many residents head to the coast and the mountains. Intercity buses and rental cars fill up, so reserve both as early as your plans allow.

The two long weekends fall at the start of the southern summer, peak season for the beaches near Valparaíso, the main port city. Reserve coastal rooms early, because rates tend to rise around both weekends.

A visitor with one trip window should weigh the Chile holidays with care. Book a table for Thursday 24 December and Friday 25 December early, and expect some restaurants to serve only a set menu.

Shows and Events Near the Dates

The Immaculate Conception holiday on Tuesday 8 December is also the day of a big concert in Santiago. Our Deep Purple guide covers the rock band’s show at the Movistar Arena, so expect busy streets and metro stations that evening.

Early in the new year, the theatre festival Teatro a Mil 2027 runs in Santiago from Sunday 3 January to Sunday 24 January. The circus show Cirque du Soleil Alegría opens on Wednesday 6 January, only days after the New Year weekend.

If you travel for music, the Fauna Primavera festival comes earlier, from Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 November 2026. It suits visitors who cannot be in Chile at Christmas.

Tips for US Visitors

US citizens do not need a visa for tourist or business stays of 90 days or fewer, the US State Department says. Your passport must be valid for the period of your stay, and you receive a Tourist Card on arrival.

The State Department also says tourists must show at least US$46 a day in funds. The Tourist Card can be extended for another 90 days for US$100 at the Chilean immigration office.

The same page advises Americans to exercise increased caution in Chile because of crime and civil unrest. Keep valuables out of sight in crowds on holiday evenings.

Buy groceries and withdraw cash by Thursday 24 December, since shops shut early that evening and stay closed the next day. Keep your phone charged and your hotel address handy, because taxis and ride apps are busy on holiday evenings.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

The financial regulator has not yet published its notice for Thursday 31 December 2026, so confirm with your own bank. Opening hours for individual shops, malls and museums on Friday 25 December and Friday 1 January are not published in one place.

The airport and bus operators have not published holiday timetables that we could confirm. Check the carrier’s own page a few days before you travel.

What Comes Next

The next Chile holidays after these are Friday 26 March 2027, Good Friday, and Saturday 27 March 2027, Holy Saturday. Together with Easter Sunday on 28 March they form the Easter long weekend.

We will update our Chile guides as event dates and sale dates are announced. Before then, our What to Do in Santiago in November 2026 guide lists what is on this month.
