Key Facts

  • Date Sunday 29 November 2026, the race day for both the full-distance IRONMAN and the 70.3 half-distance race.
  • Venue Valdivia, Los Ríos Region, Chile: swim on the Calle-Calle River, bike loops towards Máfil, and a run from Parque Saval on Isla Teja through the city centre.
  • Distances Full race: 3.8 km swim (2.4 miles), 180 km bike (112 miles) and 42.2 km run (26.2 miles), about 226 km in all. The 70.3 runs on the same day over half that distance.
  • Tickets Athlete registration is sold out for both races, and no spectator ticket has been announced.
  • Prices Spectator admission is not published. The first full-distance entry release in August 2025 cost 700,000 Chilean pesos (about US$711).
  • Doors and start IRONMAN’s schedule, last updated on 2 October 2026, lists the full-distance race start at 8:00 a.m.
  • For US visitors No visa is needed for tourist stays of up to 90 days. The State Department rates Chile at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, in an advisory issued on 19 August 2026.
  • Power Index Chile ranks 3rd of 14 in The Rio Times Latin America Power Index, with 63.6 points (October 2026 edition).

Valdivia, a river city in southern Chile, will stage the country’s first full-distance IRONMAN on Sunday 29 November 2026. The race covers a 3.8 km swim, a 180 km bike ride and a 42.2 km marathon, and athlete registration is already sold out.

For US readers the practical points are that no visa is needed for stays of up to 90 days and that Valdivia is a short domestic flight from the capital, Santiago. No broadcast for the 2026 race has been announced, while a 70.3 race, the half-distance version, runs on the same day and is also sold out.

IRONMAN Valdivia 2026: Chile’s First Full-Distance Race

IRONMAN’s own race page lists the Itaú IRONMAN Valdivia for 29 November 2026 and calls it the transformation of the Valdivia 70.3 course into the city’s first full-distance IRONMAN. Itaú, a banking brand, is the title partner, and World Centric Group, a Chilean event producer, runs the weekend.

A full-distance race is also known as a 140.6, after the total miles of swimming, cycling and running. The Chilean regional paper Diario Río Bueno puts the Valdivia total at 226 km.

La Tercera reported in August 2025 that only one other full-distance IRONMAN exists in South America, in Brazil. IRONMAN’s registration page now says the race offers qualifying slots to the 2027 IRONMAN World Championship, although the number of slots has not been published.

Interest was strong from the first day of sales. Chilean outlet Majos describes the date as the most awaited in the national triathlon calendar.

Two Races on One Day: the Full Distance and the 70.3

The Itaú IRONMAN 70.3 Valdivia, the third edition of the half-distance race, takes place on the same Sunday over a 1.9 km swim, a 90 km bike ride and a 21.1 km run. En Cancha says the two races share the same circuit, Diario Río Bueno says they run in parallel, and the 70.3 is also sold out.

The full-distance race accepts relay teams as well as solo athletes. Decathlon Chile is entering a staff team that will swim and run, while the national cyclist Beatriz Morales rides the 180 km, according to Majos.

In August 2025 La Tercera reported that the organisers planned to keep the total field at 2,200 participants. How that number splits between the two races has not been published.

The Course: River Swim, Two Bike Loops and a City Marathon

The swim is a one-way route that enters the Calle-Calle River on the waterfront in front of the Nautic training station and heads up the first arm of the Cau-Cau River. IRONMAN’s course page says wetsuits are mandatory and that the start time is chosen so the river current is weak or absent.

The bike course is two loops of a fast, mostly flat road that starts near the Tres Marías airfield. It passes Cabo Blanco and the Cruces River, follows the Cayumapu River towards Máfil, reaching the 37 km mark, and crosses the Pichoy Memorial Bridge at about 61 km.

IRONMAN expects average bike speeds near 37.5 km/h (about 23 mph) on well-kept asphalt, with some wind. Race director Fernanda Castro told La Radio, as quoted by BioBioChile, that the route is much like the 70.3 course, only doubled.

The marathon starts at Parque Saval on Isla Teja and crosses the Cau-Cau, Calle-Calle and Pedro de Valdivia bridges. It then runs three loops between the Costanera, the riverside promenade, and Avenida España, where it leaves the bike route.

IRONMAN publishes swim, bike and run maps on the course page and warns that maps are subject to change. Castro said in August 2025 that the swim would start further back, near the Collico sector, while the current schedule lists the race start at Avenida Arturo Pratt and Ecuador, so check the final maps before choosing a viewing spot.

Race Weekend Schedule and Start Times

The weekend opens on Thursday 26 November, when athlete check-in and the IRONMAN Village open at Parque Saval from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., with the same Village hours on Friday and Saturday. On Friday 27 November the Decathlon IRONKIDS and Decathlon Family Run take place at Parque Saval, with the children’s races from 4:30 p.m. and the 5 km and 3 km family runs in the evening.

The race itself is on Sunday 29 November, and IRONMAN’s schedule, last updated on 2 October 2026, lists the full-distance start at 8:00 a.m. at Avenida Arturo Pratt and Ecuador, with the transition zone opening at 5:00 in the morning. The official end of the race is 1:00 on Monday morning, and IRONMAN says the schedule is subject to change.

The 70.3 starts from the Espacio Fluvial pier, with the professional men at 8:10 a.m., the professional women at 8:15 a.m. and the age-group athletes at 10:00 a.m., all on Sunday. On Monday 30 November at 11:00 a.m. the Village at Parque Saval hosts the full-distance awards and the 2027 IRONMAN World Championship slot roll-down, according to the same schedule.

Registration, Entry Fees and Who Is Racing

IRONMAN’s race page shows registration as sold out for both races and offers a Notify Me button for updates. Registration opened on Monday 11 August 2025, and Castro told La Radio that the first release of 250 places filled within minutes before the organisers extended it to 350.

The full-distance fee in that first release was 700,000 Chilean pesos (about US$711), BioBioChile reported. The rate on 19 October 2026 was about 984 pesos per US dollar, and the fee excludes travel and lodging.

We found no published professional start list for the full-distance race. Macarena Salazar, who won the 70.3 in 2024, told La Tercera in August 2025 that she hoped to make her full-distance debut at Valdivia, but her entry is not confirmed.

How to Watch From the United States

No broadcaster or livestream for the 2026 race has been announced, and IRONMAN’s Valdivia page shows no broadcast partner. US fans should therefore plan for the possibility of no live coverage.

Chile’s public broadcaster TVN showed the 2025 half-distance race live for more than five hours. Whether TVN returns for the full distance, and whether any feed is available outside Chile, has not been announced.

Getting to Valdivia From the United States

US visitors will usually connect through Santiago’s Arturo Merino Benítez airport (SCL), covered in our Santiago city guide. The organisers of the UTMB Torrencial trail race in Valdivia say LATAM, Sky Airline and JetSMART fly from Santiago to Pichoy airport (ZAL), a flight of one to one and a half hours.

The same guide puts the drive from Pichoy airport to downtown Valdivia at about 30 minutes. By road the city is about 840 km (522 miles) south of Santiago on Route 5, a journey of nine to ten hours by car and ten to twelve by bus.

With two sold-out races, rooms and flights in race week are likely to be tight, so book early. Our guide to the Best Places to Live in Chile for Expats 2026 covers other southern and central cities if you plan a longer stay.

Weather and What to Pack

IRONMAN lists typical conditions of an average high of 69 °F (20 °C), an average low of 47 °F (8 °C) and an average water temperature of 57 °F (14 °C) for the race. Race-day highs in 2023, 2024 and 2025 ranged from 63 to 74 °F (17 to 24 °C), with lows between 41 and 56 °F (5 to 13 °C).

Majos notes that spring in Valdivia can bring rain without notice. Spectators should pack a waterproof layer and warm clothes for the early hours.

Entry Rules and Safety for US Visitors

The State Department’s Chile page, last updated on 2 July 2026, says US citizens need no visa for tourist stays of 90 days or less and receive a Tourist Card on arrival. A passport must be valid for the whole stay.

The department’s Chile advisory, issued on 19 August 2026, rates the country at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, citing crime, unrest and health. It has no warning specific to Valdivia or the Los Ríos Region, and it says street crime is most frequent in Santiago, Valparaíso and the northern cities.

The advisory notes that earthquakes and tsunamis can occur at any time and that Andean volcanoes can erupt and disrupt travel. Wildfire season peaks from December to March, just after the race.

Readers weighing another endurance trip can compare this race with our Ironman Cozumel 2026 Triathlon Guide. Petty crime such as pickpocketing is common in Chile, so keep valuables out of sight in crowds at the finish area.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

The athlete guide, cut-off times and road-closure plans had not been published where we could read them on 19 October 2026. Spectator admission and the Village hours on race day have also not been announced.

No professional start list, prize purse or number of world-championship qualifying slots has been published for Valdivia. Whether any broadcaster will cover the race is open.

IRONMAN’s course page describes the swim entry in front of the Nautic training station, its schedule gives Avenida Arturo Pratt and Ecuador, and the race director spoke of the Collico sector in 2025. We follow IRONMAN’s current pages and flag the difference until final maps are out.

The first-release price of 700,000 Chilean pesos (about US$711) is the only entry fee we found, and later release prices are unknown. Sold-out status can change if IRONMAN reopens places, which it has not announced.
