About 1.2 million people of Venezuelan origin live in the United States. Washington’s choices in 2025 and 2026 now decide who may stay.

About 1.2 million people of Venezuelan origin lived in the United States in 2024, says the Census Bureau, the federal statistics agency. That makes the Venezuela diaspora 1.7% of US Hispanics, and it grew 29% from 2023 to 2024.

Since 2025 Washington has ended their temporary protections, closed parole routes and limited new entry. This guide covers how many they are, where they live, what they send home and what US policy means.

More coverage sits on the Rio Times Venezuela page. Figures are dated, and counts based on surveys are estimates, not head counts.

How Big the Venezuela Diaspora Is

The 2024 American Community Survey (ACS), the bureau’s yearly sample survey, counted 1,168,271 people of Venezuelan origin in the United States. The margin of error is about 42,000, because the ACS estimates from a sample.

That was up from 903,153 in 2023, a rise of 29% and the fastest of any listed Hispanic origin group. All US Hispanics grew 4.4% over the same year, from 65.1 million to 68.0 million.

Venezuelans are 1.7% of US Hispanics and the ninth-largest origin group in the table. Mexicans, Puerto Ricans, Cubans, Salvadorans, Dominicans, Guatemalans, Colombians and Hondurans are larger.

The same survey counted 987,647 people born in Venezuela, up from 769,664 in 2023. They are about 2% of the 50.2 million foreign-born people in the country.

Origin counts also include US-born children and grandchildren, while birthplace counts only people born abroad. Both are survey estimates with margins of error, so small differences between years need caution.

For scale, the World Bank, the global development lender, puts Venezuela’s population at 28.5 million in 2025. The people born in Venezuela and counted in the United States equal about 3.5% of that.

Where Venezuelans Live From Miami to Houston

Florida had 466,526 people of Venezuelan origin in 2024, about 40% of the national total, the ACS shows. Texas followed with 193,519, then Georgia with 55,055, Illinois with 40,846 and New York with 37,914.

Florida and Texas together hold more than half of the total. The largest metropolitan areas in 2024 were these, with ACS counts:

  • Miami area (Miami, Fort Lauderdale, West Palm Beach): about 252,600 people.
  • Orlando area: about 122,200 people.
  • Houston area: about 83,400 people.
  • New York City area (with Newark and Jersey City): about 59,700 people.
  • Dallas and Fort Worth area: about 58,700 people.
  • Atlanta area: about 45,000 people.

Orlando has the highest local share of the big metros, with Venezuelans at 4.2% of residents. The Miami area share is 3.9%, but the community there is about twice as large.

Georgia, Illinois and New York each hold less than 5% of the national total. Outside Florida and Texas, the Venezuelan-origin population is spread thinly across many states.

How They Arrived and Which Routes Closed

Washington opened legal routes as Venezuelans left their country. It designated Venezuela for Temporary Protected Status in 2021 and again on 3 October 2023.

DHS also ran parole programmes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans, announced in 2022 and 2023. Parole is permission to enter and stay temporarily without a visa, granted case by case.

The Census count of Venezuelan-born residents rose from 769,664 in 2023 to 987,647 in 2024. Border encounter counts, asylum decisions and arrival years come from other tables that this guide did not verify.

Venezuela’s own crisis is the backdrop to these numbers. The World Bank counts 28.5 million residents in 2025, and remittances have grown each year since 2023.

Money Sent Home to Venezuela

The World Bank estimates that personal remittances to Venezuela reached US$4.305 billion in 2025. That is up from US$3.806 billion in 2024 and US$3.524 billion in 2023.

That equals about US$151 for every resident, using the World Bank’s 28.5 million population for 2025. The figure covers transfers from every country, not only the United States.

Remittances were US$3.869 billion in 2022 and US$3.692 billion in 2021, so 2025 is the highest of the five years. The indicator used here is not split by sending country.

Legal Status After TPS and Parole Ended

Temporary Protected Status (TPS) lets nationals of a country in crisis live and work in the United States for set periods. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) ended the 2023 designation on 7 April 2025 and the 2021 one on 7 November 2025.

Notices in the Federal Register, the government’s official journal, announced the two terminations on 5 February and 8 September 2025. Courts blocked them at first, but the Supreme Court granted the government stays in 2025.

On 25 June 2026 the Supreme Court held in Mullin v Doe that the TPS law bars court review of non-constitutional claims. The case concerned Haiti and Syria, but the same statute governs Venezuela.

On Monday, 5 October 2026 the Supreme Court vacated a Ninth Circuit appeals court judgment in the Venezuela TPS case, No. 26-48. It remanded the case for reconsideration in light of Mullin v Doe, and the outcome is not yet known.

DHS ended the parole programmes for Cubans, Haitians, Nicaraguans and Venezuelans on 25 March 2025. Parole that had not expired ended on 24 April 2025 unless DHS decided otherwise in an individual case.

Other routes remain, including family and employer green cards (permanent residence), asylum claims and naturalisation. How many Venezuelans use each route is not published in the primary sources checked here.

A DHS final rule effective Wednesday, 14 October 2026 ends automatic work permit extensions for renewal filers in certain categories. It finalises an interim rule of 30 October 2025, and a processing gap can now stop work in those categories.

Entry Limits and Direct Flights

A presidential proclamation signed on 16 December 2025 continued partial entry limits on nationals of Burundi, Cuba, Togo and Venezuela. It covers immigrants and nonimmigrants who were outside the United States without a valid visa on 1 January 2026.

Exceptions include green card holders, dual nationals travelling on another passport, and holders of certain diplomatic and international-organisation visas. The State Department must report every 180 days on whether to keep the limits.

The Department of Transportation rescinded its 2019 order suspending all direct flights between the two countries. A DHS notice published on 17 April 2026 says DHS is re-establishing service and assessing airports one by one.

Executive Order 14373 of 9 January 2026, on Venezuelan oil revenue, lists “ending the dangerous influx of illegal immigrants” as a goal. Counts of deportation flights to Venezuela in 2026 are not published in the primary sources checked here.

Politics, Culture and Community

Delcy Rodríguez heads the government in Caracas, and the National Assembly, Venezuela’s legislature, calls her president of the Republic. Its record of 15 January 2026 names her acting president when she gave the annual message.

The Assembly said on 23 October 2026 that talks between the government and the opposition-led 2015 Assembly finished a third round. Jorge Rodríguez, the Assembly’s president, said he and the opposition coordinator then met Delcy Rodríguez.

The US Treasury’s sanctions office, OFAC, lists 20 Venezuela general licences issued or amended between 10 February and 16 October 2026. General licences are public permits for named business, covering oil, minerals, telecoms, banks, debt talks and, on 16 October, earthquake relief.

No election date was found in the sources checked on 27 October 2026. The diaspora has long pressed for one, and Venezuelans gathered in Florida in February 2019 to call for free elections.

What It Means for US Readers

Employers should check that Venezuelan staff hold valid work permits, because TPS-based permits have ended. Florida and Texas hold more than half of the Venezuelan-origin population, so firms there are most likely to be affected.

Travellers should read the State Department’s current Venezuela advisory before booking, because US rules on flights changed in April 2026. Direct flights are being re-established, but no airline start date was confirmed for this guide.

Investors and lenders should note that OFAC publishes new or amended licences often. Anyone sending money or doing business in Venezuela should check the current licence list before acting.

Families with Venezuelan relatives should seek advice from a licensed immigration lawyer or an accredited representative. Rules changed in February, March, April, September and November 2025, and again in 2026.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket, where users bet real money, asks whether Venezuela will schedule a presidential election by 31 December 2026. It showed 15% on 27 October at 9:39 a.m. ET, with about US$160,000 traded on that contract.

A contract for 31 March 2027 showed 36%, but only about US$2,000 had traded, too thin to treat as a signal. Contracts for 31 January and 31 March 2026 both resolved No.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What Is Not Known

Nobody knows the exact number of Venezuelans in the United States. The Census figures are survey estimates with margins of error, and the Venezuelan-origin count jumped 29% in one year.

No primary source checked here gives earnings, poverty, arrival years or the unauthorised share of Venezuelans in the United States. Deportation totals for 2026 and remittances by sending country were not found either.

State Department and International Monetary Fund pages could not be opened, so embassy, advisory and inflation data are left out. Pages of the immigration agencies USCIS and ICE could not be opened either.

No later entry proclamation was found through 27 October 2026, but whether the December 2025 limits still apply was not confirmed. Whether airlines have restarted direct flights was also not confirmed.

No date for a Venezuelan presidential election was found. The Ninth Circuit’s next ruling on Venezuelan TPS and the effect of the 14 October 2026 work-permit rule are not yet known.
