Today’s Focus

Mexico’s main share index slipped on Friday, pulled down by mining and airport names, even as the peso stayed near its strongest level since late May.

The S&P/BMV IPC closed at 64,574, down 0.39%, with Grupo México, Peñoles and Banorte among the heaviest drags.

The peso ended at 17.017 per dollar, unchanged in practical terms, after a softer US producer-price report weakened the dollar.

Femsa rose 1.3% and was the standout gainer among large caps, though it was not enough to lift the wider index.

What matters today. The domestic equity market remains heavy while the currency stays supported by dollar weakness and steady foreign inflows.

01 The session in one read

S&P/BMV IPC daily candlestick chart

Mexico’s stock market closed lower on Friday, with the S&P/BMV IPC – the country’s benchmark equity gauge – falling 0.39% to 64,574 points. The index was dragged lower by mining and airport operators, sectors that have been volatile as global investors reassess commodity demand.

The Mexican peso, by contrast, held firm. It ended the day at 17.017 per US dollar, almost unchanged and still near its strongest level since late May, as a softer US producer-inflation report weakened the US currency.

Assessment — Equities lag a resilient peso MEDIUM

The message from Friday’s session is that currency strength is not translating into broad equity buying. Investors continue to favour liquid, defensive consumer names such as Femsa and América Móvil, while cyclical-heavy sectors tied to commodities and infrastructure face profit-taking.

A cooler-than-expected US producer inflation print weakened the dollar and gave the peso room to hold near 17, but it also raises questions about global growth into year-end.

The variable to watch is whether the peso’s strength persists into next week, and whether local investors start rotating from currency-linked exporters into stocks.

The session read
The S&P/BMV IPC eased 0.39%, with breadth positive — 10 of 15 names higher. Financials led, while Telecom lagged.

03 Why it moved — global rate hopes meet local profit-taking

The main external driver was a softer-than-expected US producer-price report, which weakened the dollar and supported the peso. That same data, however, kept investors cautious about global growth, hurting commodity-linked names such as miners.

Domestically, there was no single event dominating. Instead, the session reflected a rotation: investors took profits in recent winners like Grupo México and Peñoles, while adding to consumer staples such as Femsa and América Móvil.

Airport operators also slipped, with Grupo Aeroportuario del Pacífico, known locally as GAP, down 1.1%. The sector remains sensitive to regulatory noise and passenger-traffic data.

04 The day’s movers

Driver Level / Move Change Note
Femsa (FEMSAUBD) $15m traded +1.3% Beverage and retail group; top large-cap gainer
América Móvil (AMXB) $38m traded +0.7% Telecom giant; defensive buying
Walmex (WALMEX) $28m traded +0.6% Retailer; steady consumer demand
Cemex (CEMEXCPO) $9m traded +0.1% Cement maker; flat after recent declines
Grupo México (GMEXICOB) $42m traded −0.7% Mining and transport; most-traded name, lower
Banorte (GFNORTEO) $23m traded −2.0% Bank; among the day’s biggest large-cap losers
Peñoles (PE&OLES) $10m traded −2.4% Miner; fell with metals prices
GAP (GAPB) $10m traded −1.1% Airport operator; dragged the index
Orbia (ORBIA) −3.5% Chemicals; biggest domestic loser
Bolsa Mexicana (BOLSAA) +1.3% Exchange operator; one of the day’s top gainers

Femsa was the standout large-cap gainer, up 1.3% with $15m changing hands, reflecting demand for defensive consumer stocks. América Móvil and Walmex also rose 0.7% and 0.6% respectively, showing steady appetite for liquid, dollar-resilient names.

On the losing side, mining shares dominated the pain. Peñoles fell 2.4%, Grupo México lost 0.7% on the day’s heaviest turnover of $42m, and chemicals maker Orbia dropped 3.5%. Banorte, Mexico’s major bank, fell 2%, while airport operator GAP shed 1.1%.

05 The regional scoreboard

Index Country Change
S&P/BMV IPC Mexico −0.39%
Ibovespa Brazil −0.10%
S&P IPSA Chile +0.39%
Merval Argentina −1.77%
COLCAP Colombia +0.84%

Latin American markets were mixed on Friday. Colombia’s COLCAP led the region with a gain of 0.84%, while Argentina’s Merval fell 1.77% as investors weighed domestic risks.

The IPC’s 0.39% decline put Mexico in the middle of the pack, underperforming Chile’s IPSA which rose 0.39%, but faring better than Argentina’s sharp drop. Brazil’s Ibovespa closed essentially flat, down just 0.10%.

06 The technical picture

The IPC’s close at 64,574 leaves the index 9.8% below its 52-week high, a sign of ongoing distribution in the equity market even as the peso trades near its strongest levels of the year.

The 64,000 area has been a support zone for the index in recent sessions, while 66,000 remains the first notable resistance. A break above that level would shift the narrative from defensive rotation to broader recovery.

07 What to watch

  • Peso stability: Watch whether USD/MXN holds near 17 or breaks lower; a sustained move below 17 could squeeze exporters but boost importers.
  • Mining sentiment: Keep an eye on metals prices and global demand signals, especially if heavyweight Grupo México and Peñoles continue to slide.
  • Airport regulation: Any fresh news on airport tariffs or passenger traffic could drive GAP and peers, which have become a bellwether for local risk.
  • Femsa and consumer names: If defensive buying persists, Femsa, Walmex and América Móvil could lead a rebound in the IPC.
