Ethiopian Christmas 2027 falls on Thursday 7 January, a public holiday that Ethiopians call Genna. The biggest crowds gather at Lalibela, a town of rock-hewn churches in a region the US government tells Americans not to visit.
That makes Addis Ababa, the capital, the realistic choice for most US visitors, with an overnight church service on Wednesday 6 January. This guide covers what is confirmed, what it costs in US$ and what nobody has announced yet.
Genna in Plain English
Genna is the Ethiopian Orthodox Christmas, a church holiday marked with fasting, prayer and a family feast. The US State Department warns travellers on a scale where Level 3 means reconsider travel and Level 4 means do not travel.
When Ethiopian Christmas Falls in 2027
Ethiopia keeps its own church calendar, so Ethiopian Christmas 2027 falls on 7 January instead of 25 December. That day is a Thursday, and public-holiday calendars list it as a national day off.
The eve is Wednesday 6 January, and Epiphany, called Timkat, follows 12 days later on Tuesday 19 January. We cover that second festival in our guide to Timkat 2027 in Addis Ababa.
Genna is a religious holiday rather than a ticketed event, so there is no box office and no seat to book. We found no organiser, venue or official ticket seller, and we say so rather than guess.
Ethiopian Christmas falls on 29 Tahsas in the Ethiopian calendar, which is 7 January in the Gregorian calendar used in the US. The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church’s own document for Timkat gives 19 January as Tir 11, and Genna sits 12 days earlier.
How Genna Is Celebrated
Many Orthodox Ethiopians fast for about 43 days before Ethiopian Christmas 2027, and Genna ends that fast. The fast begins in late November, so the holiday meal is the first feast after weeks of fasting.
On the eve, Wednesday 6 January, worshippers attend an overnight service of chanting, singing and prayers. Masses and sermons follow on Christmas morning, Thursday 7 January.
Many worshippers dress in white, often in the netela, a thin white cotton shawl with coloured stripes at the ends. A tour operator in Addis Ababa advises long sleeves and a scarf for women when entering a church.
Spellings vary, so you will also see Ganna, Gena and Lidet in guides and travel offers. All of them mean the same Christmas holiday on 7 January.
Lalibela or Addis Ababa for US Visitors
Lalibela is a town of rock-hewn churches carved in the 12th and 13th centuries, and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Its Genna celebrations run from 5 January until the morning of 7 January.
Crowds there are large, with estimates running from tens of thousands of people upward. Hotels and flights fill early, so book ahead if you go.
Lalibela lies in the Amhara Region, which the US State Department lists at Level 4, Do Not Travel, because of armed conflict and unrest. The same advisory, dated 1 April 2026, rates the whole country Level 3 and lists other Do Not Travel regions, such as Tigray and Afar.
For Ethiopian Christmas 2027, most Americans should look at Addis Ababa, where the advisory says the security situation is stable. It adds that conditions may worsen without warning, so reread it before you book.
Daytime options in the capital include Unity Park, Entoto Park, the Science Museum and the National Palace Museum. Services at churches run overnight and into the morning, so plan your rest around them.

Flights, Visa and Safety for Americans
Ethiopian Airlines, the national carrier, said on 17 March 2026 that its direct Atlanta to Addis Ababa flights would resume on 21 May 2026. For Ethiopian Christmas 2027 check January days and fares, because the release gives no schedule.
In January Ethiopia is 8 hours ahead of New York, so allow a day to recover from the flight. Bole International Airport is the capital’s main gateway.
US citizens need a visa, and the official portal is evisa.gov.et, run by Ethiopia’s immigration service. Visa guides list US$62 for 30 days and US$152 for 90 days, but the portal showed us no readable fees, so confirm them there.
The State Department says petty crime is common in popular tourist locations and violent crime is more common after dark. Carry a copy of your passport and leave the original in the hotel safe.
Costs and Planning Tips
We found no entry fee for Ethiopian Christmas 2027 church services, so the main costs are the flight, the visa and a hotel. Hotel rates for 6 and 7 January have not been published, so ask for holiday prices and cancellation terms.
Book early if you want Lalibela, where hotels and flights fill ahead of Genna. Check your travel insurance against the Do Not Travel listing first, because insurers can refuse cover in warned regions.
Stand back from processions, ask before photographing priests and dress modestly. Keep your phone and wallet in a front pocket in the crowd.
If you plan an earlier trip, our guide to the Great Ethiopian Run on Sunday 22 November covers the same visa and safety picture. The race runs more than six weeks before Genna.
Our Addis Ababa city page collects our coverage of the capital for newcomers. The current guide, What to Do in Addis Ababa in October 2026, lists what is on this month.
What Is Not Confirmed Yet
We found no official programme for Ethiopian Christmas 2027 from the church, the Ministry of Tourism or the Addis Ababa city administration. Service times, which churches welcome visitors and any road closures are therefore unknown.
No ticket seller, entry fee or hotel rate for 6 and 7 January has been published. Airline schedules to Addis Ababa and Lalibela for January 2027 are also not yet public in the sources we found.
Calendar sources agree that Ethiopian Christmas 2027 is Thursday 7 January, but confirm the date with your hotel in early January. We also cannot say whether the US advisory will change before you travel.
