Copper Prices Ease as Tariff Deadline Nears, Markets Adjust to New Realities
Copper prices edged slightly lower today, trading around $5.77 per pound, down about 0.7% from yesterdays close according to Trading Economics data.
This modest dip comes amid significant volatility caused by the approaching August 1 implementation of a hefty 50% tariff on copper imports by the United States.
As businesses rush to beat the deadline, imports into U.S. ports surged dramatically last quarter, totaling 541600 metric tons. This influx distorted prices, creating a notable disparity between U.S. and global markets.
Arbitrage premiums jumped above $3000 per ton, illustrating heightened market tensions. Globally, copper supplies face mounting uncertainties. Europes regulatory scrutiny of metal scrap movements underscores potential smelter supply disruptions.
Australias Glencore has signaled possible shutdowns at its Mount Isa smelter and Townsville refinery due to economic pressures.

Such closures would significantly tighten global copper supplies, potentially impacting thousands of jobs and prompting governmental intervention.
Additionally, Anglo American reported a 13% decline in copper output for the first half of 2025. This further tightened supply, pressuring global inventories just as tariff-driven uncertainty clouds demand projections.
Chinas ongoing crackdown on metal overcapacity brings another dimension to copper’s outlook. Although this policy aims at long-term market stability, it introduces short-term unpredictability for prices.
From a technical standpoint, copper recently peaked near its annual high of $5.895 per pound but now consolidates slightly below this level.
The daily Relative Strength Index (RSI) currently signals an overbought condition around 76, hinting prices might retreat or stabilize in the near term. On a shorter time frame, the 4-hour chart reveals decreasing momentum, with RSI dropping to 66 from higher levels.
The Moving Average Convergence Divergence (MACD) indicator also shows a loss in upward momentum, suggesting a potential short-term pullback toward the $5.75 to $5.80 support range.
Investor appetite for copper-related Exchange-Traded Funds (ETFs) remains robust, attracting inflows of approximately $767 million last week alone.
This trend indicates sustained investor interest driven by inflation concerns and green energy investments, which depend heavily on copper.
Overall, the copper market navigates complex dynamics between imminent tariffs, tightening global supplies, and mixed technical signals.
Traders remain cautious, awaiting clearer signals on how tariff-induced disruptions might reshape market fundamentals and future price trends.
