Chile’s IPSA Slides as Technical Breakdown Pressures Stock Market

Santiago’s S&P IPSA index closed at 8,048.93 on June 3, 2025, marking a 0.16% decline for the day, according to TradingView data. The session capped a week of losses, with the index falling from highs above 8,250 as global uncertainty and technical selling weighed on sentiment.

Chile’s equities have lost momentum since late May, when a sharp 1.28% drop on May 28 triggered a technical breakdown that accelerated selling pressure and pushed the index through key support levels.

The IPSA’s chart shows a clear downtrend over the past week. The index now trades below its 50-day moving average, a level near 8,069 that had previously acted as support.

The 200-day moving average, far below at 7,573, remains a distant safety net. Bollinger Bands have widened, reflecting increased volatility. The Relative Strength Index (RSI) has dropped below 60, signaling weakening momentum as buyers step aside.

The MACD histogram is deteriorating, with the signal line approaching a bearish crossover. These indicators confirm a market in correction mode, with sellers in control and no immediate sign of reversal.

Volume surged during the initial breakdown, validating the broad-based nature of the decline. The market’s inability to reclaim the 8,200–8,250 resistance zone underscores the strength of the current downtrend.

The next technical support lies near 8,030, just above the lower edge of the Ichimoku cloud, which now acts as a buffer against further losses. Within the IPSA, utilities and select industrials outperformed.

Enel Chile rose 1.36% to 69.89, and Enel Americas gained 0.57% to 92.96, buoyed by defensive flows and stable earnings. ABC SA advanced 4.12% to 12.13, while Hites S.A. surged 8.00% to 103.58, leading the winners.

Paz Corp and Inv La Constru posted smaller gains, up 2.40% and 1.59% respectively. On the downside, construction and real estate stocks suffered. Socovesa fell 3.14% to 82.10, and Plaza declined 2.23% to 2,185.10.

Santander Chile dropped 1.23% to 57.93, reflecting pressure on financials amid rising global rates and trade uncertainty. Vapores slipped 0.87% to 54.52.

Compared to regional peers, Chile’s IGPA index remains up nearly 25% year-to-date, outperforming many emerging markets. However, the recent correction has brought it off its all-time high of 42,425 set in May.

The Central Bank of Chile held its policy stance steady, citing persistent global risks and domestic resilience. Sovereign interest rates have edged lower, and the peso has appreciated, but external shocks continue to cloud the outlook.
