Argentina’s MERVAL Slips Further as Caution Reigns and Technicals Signal Weakness
The S&P MERVAL Index closed Tuesday at 2,206,291.24 ARS, down 1.15% on the day, according to official exchange data and the attached TradingView chart.
The index has now lost more than 6% since the start of May and over 16% since its 2025 high, underlining the persistent pressure on Argentine equities.
This decline places the MERVAL behind most major emerging market peers, with Brazil and Mexico showing greater resilience over the same period.
The chart shows the MERVAL trading well below its 200-period and 50-period moving averages, confirming a bearish trend both in the short and long term.
The index pierced the lower Bollinger Band, a classic sign of oversold conditions, but the lack of strong buying interest suggests continued selling pressure. The price now sits near the lower edge of the Ichimoku cloud, which signals uncertainty and potential support but no clear reversal.
The technical picture remains fragile, with momentum indicators pointing to further weakness and the next key support level near 2,106,291 ARS. Resistance stands at 2,297,337 ARS, and only a sustained move above this would indicate a shift in sentiment.

Trading volumes stayed robust, but the market’s breadth was negative. Banco de Valores led gainers with a 3.96% rise, followed by Central Puerto and Loma Negra, which gained 2.52% and 1.79%, respectively.
BYMA and Aluar also posted modest advances. On the downside, Grupo Supervielle fell 5.53%, Trans Gas Sur dropped 4.56%, and BBVA Banco Frances lost 4.53%.
Comercial del Plata and Edenor rounded out the top five losers, each declining more than 4%. These moves reflect sector rotation and profit-taking, with financials and utilities under the most pressure.
The story behind these numbers centers on a market grappling with both local and global headwinds. President Javier Milei’s administration has pushed through major reforms, including a $20 billion IMF deal and the removal of capital controls.
These steps helped inflation drop to around 50% from over 270% last year, but skepticism remains high. The government’s first major bond sale in seven years attracted strong demand, yet the nearly 30% yield demanded by investors highlights persistent doubts about Argentina’s economic stability.
Globally, risk appetite weakened as trade tensions and falling commodity prices weighed on sentiment. Wall Street’s recent volatility and a sharp drop in oil prices added to the cautious mood.
ETF flows into Argentine stocks remained subdued, with the ARGT ETF posting another daily decline and no significant inflows, reflecting the hesitancy of foreign investors. The MERVAL’s slide tells a story of a market caught between bold reforms and deep-rooted risks.
Investors see potential in Argentina’s shift toward open markets, but persistent inflation, high yields, and global uncertainty keep confidence in check. The coming days will test whether stabilization efforts can restore momentum or if further declines lie ahead.
