Colombian Stocks Retreat Sharply as Technical Weakness and Global Volatility Hit Sentiment

The Colombian stock market lost ground over the last 24 hours, with the MSCI COLCAP index closing at 1,608.90, down 1.02% from the prior session, according to official exchange data and the attached TradingView chart.

This drop follows a period of strong performance that saw the index reach a five-year high in mid-May, but the latest session marks a clear shift in momentum.

The chart shows the COLCAP breaking decisively below its 50-day and 100-day moving averages, with the price closing just above the lower Bollinger Band.

These technical signals point to a loss of upward momentum and a possible trend reversal. The index now sits close to a key support level around 1,600, with the 200-day moving average at 1,574.12 providing the next major floor.

The candlestick pattern for the day is a large red bar, confirming heavy selling pressure and a bearish tone. Volume during the session remained moderate, which suggests investors are reducing risk rather than panicking.

Technical indicators reinforce the negative outlook. The MACD, which tracks momentum, has crossed below its signal line, signaling a shift to bearish momentum.

The RSI, a measure of market strength, has likely moved toward neutral or slightly oversold territory, reflecting the recent sharp drop but not yet indicating extreme conditions.

The biggest losers in the session included Bancolombia Pf, which fell 3.82%, and Bolsa De Valores De Colombia, down 1.44%. Mineros SA and Banco De Bogota also posted losses of 1.23% and 1.22%, respectively.

These declines came amid a broader regional pullback and suggest profit-taking in financials and mining after recent highs. On the winning side, Grupo Energia Bogota gained 1.54%, while Interconnection Electric rose 2.15%, bucking the trend as investors rotated into utilities and infrastructure, which often act as defensive plays during market stress.

Colombian stocks have outperformed many regional peers so far this year, with the COLCAP up more than 20% year-to-date, surpassing Chile’s IPSA and Mexico’s IPC over the same period.

However, the recent reversal brings the Colombian benchmark closer in line with the region, as global risk aversion and renewed trade tensions pressure emerging markets.

Fundamental conditions remain mixed. Colombia’s inflation rate stands at 5.16%, and growth remains subdued at 0.2% for the first quarter. The central bank’s recent rate cut to 9.25% provided some support for equities, but concerns over fiscal stability and energy sector earnings persist.

ETF flows have stabilized after earlier outflows, and trading in market leaders like Ecopetrol remains active, supported by new market-maker programs aimed at improving liquidity.

Still, the technical break below key averages and the loss of short-term support levels suggest caution is warranted as the market reassesses its recent gains in light of shifting global conditions.
