Chile’s Copper Output Falters in June —Mining Realities Expose Fragile Supply

Chile’s National Institute of Statistics (INE) confirms the country’s copper output fell sharply in June 2025, dropping 6% from the same month the year before to 424,390 metric tons.

This decline matters because copper is Chile’s backbone, making up about half its exports and a major source of public funds. When production drops, the impact stretches from mine workers in the remote north to the government in Santiago.

The government then has less revenue for basic services. Behind the numbers, the story is about the aging Collahuasi mine. Operated by Glencore and Anglo American, Collahuasi saw a 33% production drop in the first half of this year compared to last, according to Glencore figures.

The mine now extracts lower-grade rock, making the work tougher and more expensive. Problems with water and equipment only add to the challenge. Each 1% fall in output at Collahuasi can cost Chile up to $60 million in exports at current prices, according to finance officials.

There is some good news. State giant Codelco has bounced back from years of historic lows and increased production by 9% so far in 2025.

Its May output rose to 130,100 tons, up 16.5% from the year before, fueled by new mining technologies and better ore. This recovery matters, as Codelco anchors jobs and public budgets.

Globally, what happens in Chile’s mines affects everyone. Chile supplies about one-fourth of the world’s copper. The metal is vital for electronics, clean energy, and transport.

Fewer shipments mean higher prices for everything from wiring to electric vehicles. Experts still expect copper prices to remain firm, with the Finance Ministry forecasting an average of $4.28 per pound in 2025, driven by steady demand.

The real story is about risk. Chile’s mining sector now faces deeper, more costly deposits and water shortages. Production gains are getting harder.
