Key Facts

  • The S&P IPSA, Chile’s benchmark stock index, closed at 11,275 points, a gain of 1.05% for the session and snapping a recent cautious streak.
  • Heavyweight lithium producer SQM-B jumped 3.7% on the day, leading the market higher as global demand expectations for the battery metal firmed up.
  • The Chilean peso weakened 0.25% to close at 915.84 per US dollar, even as the local stock market found strong footing from retail and commodity names.
  • Consumer-facing giants Falabella and Cencosud added 0.9% and 2.0% respectively, providing a broad base to the rally with solid turnover.
  • Bank BCI surged 5.6%, the standout financial gainer, hinting at renewed local conviction on Chile’s domestic economic momentum.

Today’s Focus

Chilean equities pushed decisively higher on Thursday, propelled by a powerful burst of buying in lithium giant SQM-B. The S&P IPSA—the country’s main stock index, tracking the 29 most-traded shares on the Santiago Exchange—gained 1.05% to settle at 11,275. That move left the index just 3% below its 52-week high, signalling resilient underlying bid.

The local currency, however, did not join the party. The US dollar rose 0.25% against the Chilean peso to 915.84, extending a modest run of strength for the greenback against its Latin American counterpart. This divergence—equities up, peso down—often reflects a market driven by commodity-linked exporters whose dollar revenues benefit from a weaker local currency.

Retailers and banks fleshed out the advance, with Falabella adding 0.9% and Cencosud climbing 2.0% on heavy volume. BCI, one of Chile’s largest banks, leapt a striking 5.6%, making it the session’s star financial name. The breadth of the move suggests that domestic fund flows, not just external commodity bets, were at work.

What matters today. The session belonged to lithium as SQM-B’s 3.7% surge lifted the entire index, proving once again that single-stock commodity narratives still steer Santiago’s daily direction.

01 The session in one read

S&P IPSA daily candlestick chart

Chile’s equity market came alive on Thursday as the S&P IPSA added 1.05% to 11,275, its strongest single-session advance in recent weeks. Every pocket of strength pointed back to lithium: SQM-B, the local listing of the world’s second-biggest lithium miner, surged 3.7% and dominated both the turnover table and the mood.

That bright commodity pulse was strong enough to drown out a slightly softer peso. The Chilean currency weakened 0.25% to 915.84 per dollar, a gentle slide that barely registered on the equity radar because for export-driven names paying costs in pesos, a weaker local currency actually fattens margins.

Retail and banking names chimed in too. Falabella and Cencosud, two of the country’s most recognisable consumer brands, rose 0.9% and 2.0% respectively, while bank BCI produced the eye-catching 5.6% jump that lifted the financial sector. The breadth gave the rally a credible feel, even though copper—Chile’s traditional anchor—was not the main driver.

Globally, trading was mixed with US benchmarks edging slightly lower, but Santiago brushed off that caution. Local investors were busy pricing in what looked like a repricing of lithium demand prospects, a theme that has quietly tightened lithium carbonate prices in China and brought bargain-hunters back to Santiago’s flagship resource stock.

Assessment — Lithium spark, not a macro shift MEDIUM

Today’s rally was concentrated rather than systemic. The IPSA’s 1.05% gain rests heavily on SQM-B’s 3.7% lithium-powered leap, with a strong second layer from a retail block. While the weakness in the peso hints at underlying dollar demand, the equity market chose to focus on the brightening revenue picture for exporters. The volume—$26 million in SQM-B alone—was serious, but the divergence between a rising index and a falling currency suggests this was a stock-specific catalyst rather than a whole-economy re-rating. The variable to watch now is whether Chile’s trade balance data on Friday reinforces the commodity optimism or exposes cracks that the peso sellers already see.

02 The day’s numbers

Measure Level Change Read
S&P IPSA 11,275 +1.05% 3% below 52-week high
IPSA intraday high 11,342 session peak
IPSA intraday low 11,149 session trough
USD/CLP 915.84 +0.25% peso weakened
USD/CLP 52-week low 851.67 peso strongest point
USD/CLP 52-week high 973.62 peso weakest point

The IPSA’s 1.05% gain carried it to 11,275, leaving the benchmark just 353 points—or 3%—below its 52-week record of 11,628. On the currency side, the peso’s 0.25% dip to 915.84 extended a gentle glide path from its strongest level of 851.67 seen earlier in the cycle.

The day’s relatively contained trading range from 11,149 to 11,342 tells a story of steady accumulation rather than a wild spike. For a foreign investor thinking in dollars, the IPSA’s rise of just over 1% was partly trimmed by the peso’s modest depreciation, but the local-currency return was still comfortably positive.

The session read
The S&P IPSA rose 1.05%, with breadth positive — 7 of 11 names higher. Consumer Staples led, while Energy lagged.

03 Why it moved — lithium’s heavy footprint

The day’s central narrative belonged to lithium, not copper. SQM-B, the B-series shares of Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile, climbed 3.7% on turnover of $26 million—a figure that alone accounted for a substantial share of the broader market’s volume. Behind the move lay tightening physical lithium carbonate prices in China, the main processing hub for battery materials.

Copper, Chile’s more familiar macroeconomic heartbeat, traded in a quieter corridor and offered no sudden jolt. But lithium’s specific supply-demand arithmetic—limited near-term capacity expansions, robust electric-vehicle battery demand—has given SQM an upward bias that the market has learned to follow.

At home, the Banco Central de Chile’s latest business perceptions report, published earlier this week, suggested that most firms were holding staffing levels steady rather than cutting, though hiring intentions had softened compared with earlier in the year. The mix of cautious labour market data and still-stable demand gave consumer-facing stocks like Falabella and Cencosud room to advance without triggering immediate inflation anxiety.

A separate government announcement about forming a working group to promote service exports—specifically wealth management and investment administration for non-resident clients—added a subtle pro-business undertone to the session, even if the immediate stock-market impact was limited to sentiment.

04 The day’s movers

Driver Level / Move Change Note
SQM-B $26m turnover +3.7% lithium rally leader
BCI $13m turnover +5.6% top bank gainer
CENCOSUD $20m turnover +2.0% retail strength
CENCOMALLS +9.5% biggest pct gainer
COPEC −1.4% energy drag

SQM-B topped the turnover chart with $26 million and a 3.7% jump that made it the session’s most influential stock. Among financials, BCI stood out with a 5.6% surge on a still-healthy $13 million in volume, while retail heavyweight Cencosud climbed 2.0% alongside a $20 million turnover.

The small-cap property name Cencomalls grabbed the session’s biggest percentage gain, leaping 9.5%, though on thinner liquidity. On the downside, fuel distributor Copec slipped 0.9% in what looked like a mild profit-taking move after a recent uptrend, while industrial conglomerate Quinenco eased 0.7%.

05 The regional scoreboard

Index Country Change
Ibovespa Brazil −1.23%
IPC Mexico −0.19%
Merval Argentina −1.76%
COLCAP Colombia +0.24%
BVL Perú Peru +0.81%

Chile’s IPSA was the standout regional gainer, contrasting with Brazil’s Ibovespa—the main São Paulo stock gauge—which slid 1.23%. Argentina’s Merval tumbled 1.76%, continuing its volatile reaction to the country’s complex inflation picture and a peso that remains heavily managed.

Colombia’s COLCAP inched up 0.24% while Peru’s BVL General index added a sturdy 0.81%, leaving Santiago in good company among the Andean markets. The regional divergence underlines how single-stock stories—Chile’s lithium, Brazil’s rate-sensitive financials—currently outweigh broad emerging-market beta.

06 The technical picture

The IPSA closed the session at 11,275, neatly reclaiming the psychologically important 11,200 level that had been tested intraday. Its 52-week high of 11,628 now serves as the obvious resistance target, while the 11,000–11,100 zone, which held for much of the previous week, becomes the first clear support.

The index remains inside a gentle ascending channel that has been in place since the June lows. With volatility gauges subdued and the VIX—Wall Street’s fear gauge—dipping a further 4.17% to 15.15, the external environment is not yet flashing the kind of stress that typically reverses a steady grind higher in risk assets.

07 What to watch

  • Trade balance data: Friday’s Chilean trade figures are expected to show exports of $11.4 billion and a surplus of $2.38 billion, giving a real-time health check on the commodity engine that powers the IPSA.
  • Inflation prints: Chile’s August inflation rate, due at noon local time Friday and forecast at 3.7% year-on-year, will shape how aggressively the central bank can talk about rate normalisation in its next policy statement.
  • Lithium pricing momentum: Chinese lithium carbonate spot prices are the invisible hand behind SQM-B; any further tightening would strengthen the bull case, while a sudden easing could gut the IPSA’s main support.
  • US payrolls: Friday’s US nonfarm payrolls report is expected to show 80,000 new jobs, a number that will steer the dollar globally and flow through to the peso and emerging-market sentiment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the S&P IPSA?

It is Chile’s benchmark stock index, tracking the 29 most actively traded shares on the Santiago Exchange. It is the main yardstick for the country’s equity market performance.

Why did the IPSA rise if the peso fell?

Many IPSA heavyweights—like SQM and mining exporters—earn revenue in dollars and pay costs in pesos, so a weaker peso can actually improve their profit margins, making the stocks more attractive.

What is SQM-B and why does it matter?

SQM-B is the most widely held series of shares in Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile, one of the world’s largest lithium and fertiliser producers. Its size means a move in SQM-B often dictates the direction of the whole IPSA.

How does copper fit into the Chilean market?

Copper is Chile’s largest export and its price has traditionally been the main driver of the peso and the stock market. When copper is quiet, other commodities like lithium or domestic retail trends can take the lead.
