Brazilian Stocks Jump as Cooling Inflation and Strong Bank Profits Spark Market Rally

By · August 13, 2025 · 3 min read

Brazil’s main stock index, the Ibovespa, leapt almost 1.7% on August 12, touching 137,914 points, after fresh data showed inflation in July rose less than experts predicted.

Lower prices for essentials like food and energy meant Brazilians faced less financial pressure last month. Brazil’s official statistics agency reported annual inflation falling to 5.23%.

This was better than both June’s level and what economists had expected. This surprise inflation news calmed fears that Brazil’s high interest rates—already at 15%—would stay in place for too long.

Investors hoped now that the Central Bank might consider lowering rates sooner, making borrowing cheaper for businesses and households. At the same time, a similar story played out in the United States.

New figures showed US inflation also came below expectations, raising bets that the US Federal Reserve will cut its own rates in September. This risk-friendly mood spread across global markets, pushing up Asian and European stocks as well.

But local company results made headlines too. BTG Pactual, Latin America’s biggest investment bank, posted record profits for the second quarter—up 42% compared to last year, marking 4.18 billion reais in adjusted net income.

Strong Earnings and Cooling Inflation Fuel Brazil Market Rally

The bank’s healthy returns sent its stock up over 10%—its biggest single-day gain in years. Investors saw this as proof that well-run businesses can thrive even when the general outlook appears shaky.

São Paulo’s water utility, Sabesp, also delivered profits far ahead of expectations, boosting its shares over 10%. Meanwhile, beauty company Natura posted a profit but failed to impress, and its shares lagged behind.

Shares in Vale, Brazil’s top mining company, rose after news that China plans to control steel output more tightly, while oil giant Petrobras edged lower along with weaker global oil prices.

Trading activity was heavy all day, a signal that investors truly believed in the rally. Technical analysis of the Ibovespa underlined the upbeat mood.

The daily chart showed the index price above all key moving averages—meaning it’s been rising faster than usual. Another trusted indicator, the Relative Strength Index, showed healthy momentum without crossing into the “too high” zone.

Measures of global liquidity, which track investment money flowing around the world, also ticked up, signaling more capital available for markets like Brazil.

Simply put, Brazil’s market rise grew out of hard facts: inflation slowed, the chance for lower rates improved, and companies delivered better-than-expected earnings.

With global investors looking for steady returns and money flowing in, Brazil enjoyed a rare moment when both its economy’s basics and technical signals lined up.

Now, both local and international investors will keep a close eye on Brazil’s next moves to see whether the recent optimism can last as new data and central bank decisions arrive.
