—Why Americans care. Brazil’s biggest companies also trade in New York as ADRs (US-listed receipts), among them Petrobras (PBR), Vale (VALE) and Itaú (ITUB), and an ETF, the iShares MSCI Brazil fund (EWZ), gives broad exposure.

—Trading hours. The B3 equity session runs 10:00 a.m. to 4:55 p.m. Brasília time, which is 9:00 a.m. to 3:55 p.m. ET until the US clocks change on 1 November.

—Prediction markets. There is no market on the index itself. Polymarket prices a Bolsonaro win in the 25 October runoff at 78.6% and a November rate cut at 90.5% (19 October 2026, 2:34 a.m. ET).

What the Ibovespa Is

The Ibovespa, short for Índice Bovespa, is the benchmark for Brazilian shares, in the way the S&P 500 is for American ones. It tracks a theoretical portfolio of the shares that trade most on the B3, the exchange in São Paulo.

The portfolio is reviewed every four months, in January, May and September, and the weights reflect the size of each company and how much its shares trade. The index is quoted in reais, so a move in the currency changes what it is worth to a dollar investor.

The Biggest Stocks in the Index

B3’s portfolio in force from 8 September to 31 December 2026 holds 76 securities from 74 companies, with a concentration in a few names. Vale (iron ore) leads with 11.16%, then Itaú Unibanco preferred shares with 8.61% and Petrobras preferred shares with 8.00%.

Petrobras ordinary shares add 4.89%, and Axia Energia, the former Eletrobras, follows at 4.85%. Because Petrobras trades in two share classes, the oil company’s combined weight of about 12.9% is larger than Vale’s.

Why US Readers Should Care

Most American investors own Brazil through ADRs and ETFs rather than on the B3 directly. Petrobras, Vale and Itaú all have New York listings that follow their Brazilian prices, and EWZ holds a broad basket of Brazilian shares.

EWZ tracks the MSCI Brazil index, not the Ibovespa, so the two move together but are not identical. Returns in dollars also depend on the real, which is why the board above shows the exchange rate next to the index.

How US Investors Buy Brazil

  • ADRs: buy shares of Brazilian companies listed in New York, such as PBR, VALE and ITUB, through any US broker, in dollars.
  • ETFs: buy EWZ or a similar fund, which holds a basket of Brazilian stocks and trades in New York hours.
  • Direct access: some international brokers offer B3 shares in reais, which adds currency, tax and settlement steps. Check the rules and costs with the broker.

Trading Hours in US Time

The regular B3 session runs from 10:00 a.m. to 4:55 p.m. Brasília time, followed by a short closing call. In Eastern Time that is 9:00 a.m. to 3:55 p.m., while US daylight saving time lasts.

B3 adjusts its hours when US clocks change, so the schedule shifts after 1 November. The exchange is closed on Brazilian holidays, and its calendar is published on b3.com.br.

What Moves the Index

Interest rates matter most. Brazil’s central bank rate sits at 13.75%, and each cut makes bonds less attractive and tends to lift shares, particularly retailers and builders that borrow heavily.

Commodities weigh heavily because Vale sells iron ore and Petrobras sells oil. The dollar-to-real rate and politics add to the swings, and inflation sets the pace of rate cuts, as our inflation guide explains.

What Moved the Index Lately

  • 2 and 5 October: the index gained 2.63% on Friday 2 October and then 7.7% on Monday 5 October, from 192,115 to 206,912, after the first round. Read how the vote moved the market.
  • 9 October: the index closed at 209,067, its highest close of 2026.
  • 16 October: it rose 0.54% to 205,430 as Petrobras preferred shares gained 4.04%, though it was down 1.74% on the week. See the full market report.

What Comes Next

  • Friday 23 October, 8:00 a.m. ET: IPCA-15, Brazil’s mid-month inflation reading.
  • Sunday 25 October: the presidential runoff; the first market reaction comes when B3 opens on Monday 26 October.
  • Wednesday 4 November, 4:30 p.m. ET: the central bank’s rate committee announces its next interest-rate decision.

What Prediction Markets Say

  • Polymarket, Brazil presidential election: Flávio Bolsonaro 78.6%, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva 21.5% (US$187,805,325 traded).
  • Polymarket, rate decision in November: a 25 basis point cut at 90.5% (US$68,952 traded).

Prices as of 2:34 a.m. ET, 19 October 2026. Prices are bets, not polls; Kalshi is regulated in the US by the CFTC.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
