The Sudan war is now a drone war that reaches markets, trucks and camps far from the front lines.Neither the Sudanese army nor its rival, the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), sent anyone to the table.

For readers in the United States, the meeting shows how far a ceasefire still is, while the UN counts the dead by the week.

Key Facts

  • Talks: Geneva meeting on Sudan ended 21 October without a deal; the army and the RSF stayed away.
  • Drones: UN human rights office counts at least 306 people killed by drone strikes from 1 to 21 October.
  • Hunger: 20 million people face acute hunger, including 200,000 at the worst, catastrophe level, says the UN.
  • Next: A seventh meeting is planned; date and place are not yet set.

What Happened in Geneva

The Sixth Consultative Meeting on Sudan took place in Geneva on Wednesday, 21 October. It was co-hosted by Switzerland and the office of the UN Secretary-General’s Personal Envoy for Sudan, Pekka Haavisto.

Delegates from 21 countries and five international organisations took part. Neither the Sudanese army, known as the SAF, nor the RSF attended, which means the talks were a meeting of outside powers and not of the two sides.

Haavisto said there are issues that should unite both parties to the conflict. The participants called for de-escalation and a humanitarian truce, but no ceasefire or binding promise came out of the day.

The group agreed to hold a seventh meeting, with the date and venue still to be decided. A technical task force will keep the coordination work going in the meantime.

A War Fought From the Sky

The UN human rights office, known as OHCHR, recorded at least 306 people killed and hundreds injured by drone strikes between 1 and 21 October. Homes, markets, hospitals and camps for displaced people were among the places hit.

One of the deadliest strikes hit a transport truck at Dibab, in West Kordofan state, and killed at least 139 people, according to the UN office. Another alleged RSF drone strike in Blue Nile state killed at least 31 displaced people, most of them women and children.

On 19 October an attack on Amiet Market in Abyei, a disputed area between Sudan and South Sudan, killed more than 80 people by the UN count. Local officials gave higher tolls, from 153 to more than 220, while South Sudan spoke of about 73, so the true number is still unclear.

Why Hunger Is the Larger Story

The UN says 20 million people in Sudan face acute hunger, and 200,000 of them are at catastrophe level, the stage just short of declared famine. The UN humanitarian office (OCHA) says 33.7 million people, need aid this year.

In Tawila, a town in North Darfur, more than 700,000 displaced people are short of food, water and health care. The Sudanese Red Crescent, the country’s main local aid group, says 25 of its volunteers have been killed since the war began in April 2023.

On Monday, 26 October, the United States, the European Union and 30 other countries warned in a joint statement that famine could spread across Sudan.

What It Means for You

If you follow Sudan from the United States, the Geneva result is a reminder that diplomacy is running well behind events. Washington signed the 26 October famine warning, which signals that hunger, not only the front line, is now its stated concern.

Travel to Sudan and areas near its borders remains dangerous for anyone without a humanitarian role. Aid and sanctions policy in Washington will keep following the UN count.

What Is Not Known

Nobody has confirmed whether either army will join the seventh meeting. No date for a truce has been announced.

The real death toll from the Abyei attack is disputed, and responsibility for several strikes is contested.

What Prediction Markets Say

Polymarket, a prediction market where users trade real money on outcomes, lists a contract on a Sudan civil war ceasefire by 31 December 2026. It priced a ceasefire at 10.5% on 28 October 2026, 9:22 a.m. ET, with about US$119,639 traded.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.
