Cuba and Angola: deepening ties in a historic partnership

Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel, during his official visit to Luanda, underscored that Angola is one of Africa’s key partners for Cuba, with broad and varied collaboration.

He expressed his wish to further to enhance economic, trade, and financial ties.

Speaking to the media at Luanda’s Presidential Palace, Díaz-Canel emphasized the commitment to nurture and expand the friendly ties and shared values with Angola.

He reflected positively on the outcomes of the recent Angola-Cuba Bilateral Commission meeting held in Cuba, where significant collaboration agreements were formulated.

Citing the depth of their collaboration, he highlighted the importance of the agreements in place and the joint efforts planned for 2024-2023.

Next to his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço, following the signing of three mutual understanding memoranda, Díaz-Canel conveyed his contentment with his visit to Angola, stating he feels “right at home.”

He characterized their bond as one of friendship, mutual respect, and shared values, mentioning the historical ties and the closeness they feel when in Angola.

Díaz-Canel also conveyed greetings from Raul Castro, former Cuban President, to the people of Angola, appreciating their support throughout the years, especially against challenges faced by external forces.

He further expressed gratitude for Angola’s assistance during challenging times in Cuba, especially during natural disasters.

Angola and Cuba’s collaboration roots back to the General Cooperation Agreement signed in 1976, focusing primarily on the education and health sectors.

Since Angola’s independence in 1975, Cuba has remained a pivotal ally, even assisting Angola against past threats from external adversaries.
