Cuba’s President Díaz-Canel on his way to the first BRICS summit

By · August 20, 2023 · 2 min read

Cuba’s President, Miguel Díaz-Canel, is set to attend the BRICS Summit in South Africa and will also be making official visits to Angola, Mozambique, and Namibia, as announced by Cuba’s Foreign Ministry.

On the social media platform formerly known as Twitter, Díaz-Canel mentioned that this would be Cuba’s inaugural participation in a BRICS summit.

He will be attending in his capacity as the current chair of the G-77 plus China group, which Cuba leads this year.

He expressed his aim to enhance effective coordination between these two mechanisms to champion the interests of the Global South.

The summit for the emerging economies group BRICS, which includes Brazil, Russia, China, and South Africa, will be held in Johannesburg from August 21 to 24.

Earlier, Angolan media confirmed the Cuban leader’s two-day official visit to Luanda starting this Sunday.

His visit is expected to include a meeting with his Angolan counterpart, João Lourenço.

Diplomatic ties between Angola and Cuba were initiated on November 15, 1975, shortly after Angola declared independence from Portugal.
