Netflix Reaches 29.4 Million Subscribers in Latin America

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – It is not Netflix’s style to openly disclose their numbers, but this week the company made an exception in a document sent to the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

Through the report, the number of subscribers to the service in Latin America is now known: 29.4 million.

The data refer to September and show that Netflix ended the same month with over 158 million subscribers worldwide. The largest base is still centered in North America: there are 67.1 million active accounts in the United States and Canada.

The second-largest base is from Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA). Together, these three regions account for 47.4 million subscribers. This is a rapidly growing base: Netflix’s number of subscribers in EMEA has increased by 40 percent over the previous year.

The third-largest market for the streaming service is Latin America. Netflix does not disclose the number of subscribers by country, but it is known that the region as a whole accounts for a base of 29.4 million active accounts, a figure 22 percent higher than that recorded in 2018.

This is followed by the Asia-Pacific region with 14.5 million subscribers and the highest growth rate: 53 percent compared to last year.

The document sent to the SEC also shows that, despite representing Netflix’s third-largest customer base, Latin America is the region with the lowest average monthly revenue per subscriber in the period between January and September 2019:

United States and Canada: US$12.36
Europe, Middle East, and Africa: US$10.26
Asia Pacific: US$9.31
Latin America: US$ 8.21

These data have now been released as a way to prepare investors for Netflix’s next financial report which, for the first time, will break down the results into the four regions covered.

Only then will the company’s performance in 2019 be detailed, but one thing is evident from the current document: Netflix has a very strong international presence and is therefore far from being threatened by Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and other competitors.
