Netflix Reaches Ten Million Subscribers in Brazil, Says Newspaper

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Streaming services have taken over the content consumption market, and Netflix is one of the main players responsible for this.

The company confirmed to Brazilian news outlet Tecnoblog that it surpassed the mark of ten million subscribers in Brazil, having a larger customer base than any pay-TV operator in this country. On a worldwide basis, Netflix has more than 150 million subscribers.

Based on audience data,  the service had 12 million subscriptions and annual revenue of R$4.5 (US$1.12) billions, almost half the revenue of TV Globo.

Considering the base of 10 million users, Netflix is already bigger than any Brazilian pay-TV operator. Anatel’s data about the market in July 2019, reveals that the Claro/NET group, with 49.34 percent of the market, had 8.1 million contracts. Sky, Oi, and Vivo, added, have 7.9 million subscribers.

Pay-TV service has suffered from customer drops in Brazil. In one year, the networks had a decrease of 7.43 percent in the number of contracts. Keeping up with this number will not be easy.

The numbers released by Netflix refer to the month of April 2019, and can fluctuate a lot from one month to the next: the cancellation of Netflix’s subscription is easy, there is no type of loyalty and the company sells prepaid cards with subscriptions that last between one and three months.

In addition, the dispute in streaming is greater every day: Amazon Prime subscription costs R$9.90 and entitles to Prime Video, Apple TV+ also arrives in November for R$9.90, besides the competition by Fox Premium, HBO Go or Telecine Play.

Meanwhile, Netflix’s most basic plan is sold for R$21.90 with SD resolution.
