Cuba is facing a significant energy crisis, highlighted by its third national blackout in less than three months on December 4, 2024.

This latest outage stemmed from a failure at the Antonio Guiteras thermoelectric power plant, which is crucial for the country’s electricity supply.

The Ministry of Mines and Energy reported that an automatic system failure caused the plant to shut down at 2:08 AM. This led to a nationwide disconnection of the electric system.

The implications of this blackout are severe. Just weeks earlier, on November 6, Hurricane Rafael triggered another widespread outage that lasted several days.

Before that, on October 18, a similar failure at the same plant resulted in a four-day blackout. These frequent disruptions have left many Cubans frustrated and anxious about their daily lives.

In Havana, the effects were immediate. Streets were largely deserted as families opted to keep their children home from school, and public sector workers were informed that their offices would remain closed.

Cuba’s Energy Crisis

A sense of uncertainty looms large as residents like Maria, a domestic worker, express their distress. They are troubled by the ongoing power issues.

This crisis is not just about inconvenience; it reflects deeper systemic problems within Cuba’s energy infrastructure. The country relies on eight aging thermoelectric plants that require constant maintenance and are often unable to meet demand.

Additionally, Cuba has turned to generators and floating power plants rented from Turkey, which rely on imported fuel that is currently in short supply.

The timing of this blackout is particularly noteworthy. It coincides with a meeting between U.S. and Cuban officials in Havana to discuss migration agreements.

This context underscores the urgency of addressing Cuba’s energy woes. An economic crisis that has persisted for three decades exacerbates these issues.

The nation faces food shortages, limited access to medicine, and soaring inflation. These issues compound the challenges posed by unreliable electricity.
