GHANA · EXPLAINER

Ghana is one of Africa’s most closely watched economies in November 2026, and it matters far beyond West Africa for gold, cocoa, oil and a stable democracy. This guide explains Ghana’s role in Africa in plain English, with the latest figures, for readers in the United States and elsewhere.

In Plain English

  • Cedi: Ghana’s national currency.
  • IMF: the International Monetary Fund, which lends to countries in financial trouble.
  • ECOWAS: the Economic Community of West African States, a regional bloc.
  • AfCFTA: the African Continental Free Trade Area, a single-market plan for the continent.
  • Galamsey: the local word for illegal small-scale gold mining.

Why Ghana Matters Beyond Its Borders

Ghana is a Gulf of Guinea country of gold, cocoa and oil, and it has become a reference point for how an African state can climb out of a debt crisis. Its capital, Accra, also hosts the secretariat of the African Continental Free Trade Area, the continent’s single-market project.

Readers in the United States feel the link through remittances, visas, trade rules and a large diaspora. For the long background, see our Ghana history guide, which traces the country from its origins to 2026.

Gold, Cocoa and Oil Pay the Bills

Ghana mined 5.94 million ounces of gold in 2025, up 23.41% from 4.82 million ounces in 2024, according to the Ghana Chamber of Mines, the mining industry body. Small-scale miners produced 3.11 million ounces, or 52.4%, and for the first time out-produced the large mines.

GoldBod, the state gold-export regulator, is to buy 30% of large miners’ output under a deal in force since 1 July 2026. The governor of Ghana’s central bank, the Bank of Ghana, said on Thursday 24 September that gold exports had become irregular in August rather than stopping, and that a significant amount shipped the week before.

Cocobod, the state cocoa marketing board, opened the 2026/27 season on Friday 25 September with a farmgate price, what farmers are paid, of GH¢42,400 (Ghana cedis) per tonne (about US$3,646 at about 11.63 cedis to the dollar). That is up from GH¢41,392 and equals 71.18% of the realised export value.

Ghana pumped 37.3 million barrels of crude in 2025, the sixth straight annual fall from 71.44 million barrels in 2019, according to PIAC, the Public Interest and Accountability Committee that watches oil income. In the first half of 2026 petroleum revenue rose 52% to US$561.41 million.

How Ghana Left the IMF Programme

The International Monetary Fund approved a US$3 billion, 39-month loan programme for Ghana in May 2023, the Extended Credit Facility for low-income countries. Its board completed the sixth and final review on Monday 27 July 2026, releasing a last payment of about US$371 million.

The board also approved a Policy Coordination Instrument, a programme that carries no IMF money but keeps reform targets under review. By the IMF’s count, Ghana’s economy grew 6.0% in 2025 and gross reserves nearly doubled to US$11.9 billion by the end of 2025, about four months of imports.

The IMF now rates Ghana’s risk of debt distress as moderate. Credit rating agencies have followed, with rating agency Fitch lifting Ghana from B- to B on Friday 8 May 2026 and rating agency Moody’s raising it from Caa1 to B3 on Friday 9 October 2026.

Prices, Rates and the Cedi

Annual inflation was 5.5% in October 2026, up from 5.2% in September and a third straight monthly rise, the Ghana Statistical Service said on 4 November. In October 2025 it was 8%.

The Bank of Ghana, the central bank, held its policy rate at 14% in September, the third hold of the year. Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson is due to present the 2027 Budget on Thursday 12 November.

The cedi lost 7.9% against the dollar by the end of June 2026, according to the Bank of Ghana. Reserves stood at US$12.05 billion on 22 September, against a peak of about US$14.5 billion earlier in 2026, according to the governor.

The Home of a Continental Market

The African Continental Free Trade Area, known as AfCFTA, aims to join Africa’s markets into one trading bloc. Its permanent secretariat is in Accra, and 50 countries have ratified the agreement, according to the secretariat.

ECOWAS, the West African regional bloc, elected Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye as its chair on Sunday 19 July 2026 at a summit in Lungi, Sierra Leone. Ghana does not chair the bloc, but President John Mahama named former security chief Larry Gbevlo-Lartey as special envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States in January 2025, the group formed by Mali, Burkina Faso and Niger after they left ECOWAS.

A Democracy With a Peaceful Record

Freedom House, a US-based democracy watchdog, rates Ghana 80 out of 100 and “Free” in its 2026 report. It notes that competitive elections since 1992 have brought peaceful transfers of power between the two big parties, Mahama’s National Democratic Congress and its rival, the New Patriotic Party.

In December 2024 Ghana’s election authority, the Electoral Commission, initially declared Mahama, of the National Democratic Congress, the winner with 56.55% of the vote. Mahamudu Bawumia, the New Patriotic Party candidate and then vice-president, took 41.61%.

Diaspora and US Ties

Ghana received about US$7.8 billion in remittances in 2025, up from about US$4.6 billion in 2024, Bank of Ghana Governor Johnson Asiama has said. He added that the United States is the largest source of those transfers.

In September 2025 Ghana agreed to accept West Africans deported from the United States, a deal Mahama says carries no quid pro quo. In the weeks that followed, Washington restored five-year multiple-entry visas for Ghanaians after earlier curbs.

The ties reach individual US cities too, as our report on Ghana’s agreement to send nurses to Columbus, Ohio shows. Ghana’s own cost of living is covered in our guide for foreigners.

Galamsey and the Fight Over Illegal Mining

Galamsey is the local word for illegal small-scale gold mining, and it is the most visible threat to Ghana’s rivers. The state water company has shut treatment plants in the past when mining muddied the raw water.

The tension is built into the economy, because small-scale gold now supplies more than half of national output. Our explainer on Ghana’s illegal gold mining sets out the history and the law.

What It Means for You

For US investors, Ghana offers gold exposure, cocoa supply and a government recovering from default, with Moody’s and Fitch both now rating it in the single-B range of credit ratings. The risks are a weaker cedi, oil output that fell for six straight years to 2025 despite a rise in the first half of 2026, and pressure on gold exports.

Travellers heading to Accra this winter can plan around our Detty December guide to Lagos and Accra events, which covers Ghana’s year-end festival season. Prices and entry rules change, so check them before booking.

What Is Not Known

We could not confirm whether gold exports are back to normal, because the central bank has described them as both paused and merely irregular. We also could not confirm an official size for the 2026/27 cocoa crop.

The current US tariff rate on Ghanaian goods is unclear, and so is whether the Sahel states will rejoin ECOWAS. One report says the government revoked a regulation that allowed mining in forest reserves in July 2026, but that is reported, not confirmed.

What to Watch

The 2027 Budget on Thursday 12 November will show how the government plans to hold its gains after the IMF exit. The central bank’s next rate decision will show whether it reads rising inflation as a threat.
