Key Facts

  • The people The US Census Bureau counts 262,340 Ghana-born residents in 2025, with a margin of error of about 19,000.
  • Where they live New York state has the most, at 51,603, followed by Maryland, New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts.
  • Money home Ghana received nearly US$7.8 billion in remittances in 2025, up from US$4.6 billion in 2024, and the United States is the largest source.
  • Entry rules Ghana is on neither list of the 16 December 2025 US proclamation that restricts entry for 39 countries, but its neighbour Nigeria is on the partial list.
  • Prediction markets Kalshi gives Ghana’s National Democratic Congress a 61% chance and the New Patriotic Party 36% in its parliamentary election market (31 October 2026, 7:34 a.m. ET).

The Ghana diaspora in the United States counts about 262,000 Ghana-born people, and its money, votes and visas matter in both countries. This guide explains how many there are, where they live, what they send home and how US rules affect them.

The Ghana Diaspora at a Glance

The US Census Bureau, the federal statistics agency, counted 262,340 Ghana-born people living in the United States in its 2025 American Community Survey. The survey is a yearly sample, with a margin of error of about 19,000 people.

A second count asks people for their family origin instead of their birthplace. It finds 252,700 Americans who name Ghanaian ancestry, with a margin of error of about 25,000.

Ghana is a West African country on the Gulf of Guinea, and its capital is Accra. See the Rio Times Ghana page for the wider picture.

The same survey counts 479,759 Nigeria-born residents. Ghana’s community is therefore roughly 55% the size of Nigeria’s, its large West African neighbour.

Africans born in the country number 2,998,406 in the same survey, out of 50,409,098 foreign-born residents. Ghana-born people therefore make up about 8.7% of African-born residents and about 0.5% of all immigrants.

The numbers matter because a sample count is an estimate, not a head count. Readers should treat 262,340 as a central figure inside a range of roughly 243,000 to 281,000.

The two counts measure different things and are close in size. The birthplace count of 262,340 and the ancestry count of 252,700 fall within each other’s margins of error.

Where Ghanaians Live in America

New York state is the clear centre of the Ghana diaspora, with an estimated 51,603 Ghana-born residents in 2025. Maryland follows with 25,855, New Jersey with 21,645, Virginia with 21,124 and Massachusetts with 18,348.

Those five states hold about 138,600 people, or roughly 53% of the national total. Ohio (16,097), Texas (13,974) and Georgia (12,848) come next among the states checked.

The Bank of Ghana’s governor called the Washington, Maryland and Virginia region home to one of the largest Ghanaian communities in the country. The Census figures for Maryland and Virginia, which together exceed 46,000 people, support that.

Only a handful of states hold large communities, so the rest of the country counts few Ghana-born residents. Illinois (9,476), Pennsylvania (8,037) and Florida (7,706) each hold fewer than 10,000, among the states checked.

State estimates carry large margins of error, so small gaps between neighbouring states are not meaningful. The national total is the most reliable number in this guide.

A Note on Margins of Error

State figures come from a sample, so each carries a wide margin; New York’s is about 7,700 and Maryland’s about 7,100. Rankings of close neighbours, such as New Jersey and Virginia, should be read as ties.

  • New York: 51,603 Ghana-born residents (2025 estimate)
  • Maryland: 25,855
  • New Jersey: 21,645
  • Virginia: 21,124
  • Massachusetts: 18,348
  • Ohio: 16,097, Texas: 13,974, Georgia: 12,848

Why Ghanaians Came

Ghana became independent from Britain in 1957, and its people have reached the United States over many decades. The Census figures show a community that is now large and concentrated in the Northeast, the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest.

Public data give no split by reason for arrival, such as family, work, study or the diversity visa lottery. That gap is listed under what is not known.

The Bank of Ghana’s governor described the US community as entrepreneurs, financiers, technologists and healthcare professionals. Remittances of nearly US$7.8 billion in 2025 suggest that many families stay closely tied to relatives at home.

The diaspora also reaches the Rio Times guide to Ghana’s population, which shows who stays at home. The money story is covered in the next section.

What Ghanaians Send Home

Governor Johnson Asiama of the Bank of Ghana, the central bank, said on 19 April 2026 that remittances reached nearly US$7.8 billion in 2025. In 2024 the figure was about US$4.6 billion, so the flow grew roughly 70% in one year.

He spoke at a diaspora roundtable in the Washington, Maryland and Virginia region. He put remittances at roughly 6% of Ghana’s economic output and said they now exceed foreign direct investment.

The governor called remittances among the most stable and counter-cyclical sources of external financing. The central bank wants to channel more of that money through formal banks and mobile money.

How Much Comes From the United States

The governor said the United States remains Ghana’s single largest source of remittance inflows. No official split by sending country was available, so the US share of the US$7.8 billion is not known.

He wants the money to become investable capital through the financial system. See the Rio Times guide to Ghana and the United States for trade and aid links.

Visas, Travel Rules and Status

A proclamation signed by President Donald Trump on 16 December 2025 took effect on 1 January 2026. It fully restricts entry for nationals of 19 countries and partially restricts entry for 20 more, 39 in total.

Ghana appears in neither list. The State Department must report on the lists within 180 days of signing and every 180 days after, so they can change.

Ghana’s neighbours are treated differently. Burkina Faso is on the full list, and Nigeria, Benin, Cote d’Ivoire and Togo are on the partial list.

Not being listed does not mean a visa is automatic. Each applicant still has to meet the normal rules, and travellers should check the US embassy in Accra before they apply.

The proclamation also treats travel documents issued by the Palestinian Authority as fully restricted. That is a separate category from nationality and does not affect Ghanaians.

Politics, Power and the Diaspora

Ghana’s elected government is led by President John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, who was still in office on 29 October 2026. The Parliament of Ghana lists the National Democratic Congress with 185 seats, the New Patriotic Party with 87 and independents with 4.

The New Patriotic Party is therefore the main opposition. The Rio Times politics guide explains both parties.

The Bank of Ghana’s governor called the diaspora a strategic asset and framed it as an economic partner. That shows how Accra now treats Ghanaians abroad.

Diaspora ties also run through churches, hometown associations and home-country holidays. No official US count of such groups exists, so this guide does not size them.

What Prediction Markets Say

Kalshi, a US-regulated betting exchange, gives Ghana’s National Democratic Congress 61% to win the next parliament. The New Patriotic Party stands at 36% (31 October 2026, 7:34 a.m. ET).

About 15,000 contracts have traded in that market, and each contract pays US$1 if it wins. The next vote is due in 2028, and the price had not moved from the previous day.

It matters to the diaspora because remittance policy depends on who holds parliament. Treat the price as a bet on a distant election, not as a poll.

Why we show this: prediction markets turn real-money bets into a live probability that moves within minutes of the news, which is why investors, campaigns and newsrooms in the United States now follow them closely. We show them next to polls and official results, never instead of them.

What It Means for US Readers

Ghanaians planning a trip to the United States should check the embassy visa page before booking. Entry rules changed in 2026, and the proclamation is reviewed every 180 days.

Ghana’s place outside the lists could therefore change. Travellers should read the rules again before each application.

Employers, banks and money-transfer firms serve a community of about 262,000 people with strong ties to Accra. For investors, remittances of nearly US$7.8 billion show how much household money flows through the Ghana diaspora each year.

What Is Not Known

No official source consulted here gives the median income of Ghana-born Americans, the number who became US citizens, or their reasons for arriving. None gives the dollar share of remittances sent from the United States either.

Current rules on immigrant visas, overseas voting and dual citizenship are not covered here. Check them with the US embassy, Ghana’s Electoral Commission and the Ghana Immigration Service.
