Two Nobel Prizes, nine Grammys and a Tour de France title. These Colombians changed how the world sees their country.

The famous people from Colombia with real global impact include two Nobel laureates and a pop star with four Grammys. Each record below was checked against the body that awarded it.

Colombia is a country of 53.4 million people, about one-sixth of the US population, according to the World Bank’s 2025 estimate. Its best-known names now reach US audiences through streaming, radio, museums and sport.

Famous People From Colombia and What Counts as Global Impact

Lists of famous Colombians often mix verified awards with fan rankings and social media counts. This guide uses a stricter test: a prize, title or record that an official body has published.

That means the Nobel Foundation for literature and peace, the Recording Academy for Grammys and the Television Academy for Emmys. For sport, it means race organisers and Colombian public institutions.

The result covers six fields: literature, peace, music, art, screen and sport. Living people are described only by achievements on the record, not by rumours or current deals.

Gabriel García Márquez and the Nobel Prize in Literature

Gabriel García Márquez was born on 6 March 1927 in Aracataca, a small town in Colombia’s Caribbean region. He died in Mexico City on 17 April 2014, the Nobel Foundation records.

He won the 1982 Nobel Prize in Literature alone, without sharing it. The prize honoured “his novels and short stories”, which combine the fantastic and the realistic.

The Nobel citation adds that his imagined world reflects “a continent’s life and conflicts”. Few writers have shaped how outsiders picture Latin America as much.

That blend became known worldwide as magical realism. His novel One Hundred Years of Solitude set it in Macondo, an invented Caribbean town.

His work still travels. A Netflix series adaptation of the novel brought Macondo to streaming audiences.

He spent much of his life in Mexico, and his former home in Mexico City still draws attention.

In Aracataca, his birthplace is now a house museum. Visitors find wall panels quoting his memoir Living to Tell the Tale, in Spanish and English.

Juan Manuel Santos and the Nobel Peace Prize

Juan Manuel Santos, born in Bogotá on 10 August 1951, was president of Colombia when he won the 2016 Nobel Peace Prize. He served two terms, from 2010 to 2018.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee honoured him “for his resolute efforts to bring the country’s more than 50-year-long civil war to an end”. The war pitted the state against the FARC, a Marxist guerrilla army, and other armed groups.

The prize gave Colombia its second Nobel laureate, 34 years after the first. It also made the 2016 peace deal a reference point for negotiators abroad.

Colombia’s security problems did not end with that deal, and its borders still shape the conflict. The guide to Colombia’s neighbours explains the regional side.

Shakira, Juanes and Karol G in Music

Shakira, born in Barranquilla on 2 February 1977, crossed into English-language pop with her 2001 album Laundry Service. The Recording Academy lists four Grammy wins from seven nominations.

Her wins came at four ceremonies, spread across a quarter of a century:

  • 2001: Best Latin Pop Album, MTV Unplugged
  • 2006: Best Latin Rock/Alternative Album, Fijación Oral Vol. 1
  • 2018: Best Latin Pop Album, El Dorado
  • 2025: Best Latin Pop Album, Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran

She performed “Hips Don’t Lie” with Wyclef Jean at the 2007 Grammy ceremony, the academy notes. The Latin Recording Academy named her its Person of the Year in 2011.

Proceeds from that gala went largely to her Pies Descalzos (Barefoot) Foundation, which supports poor children in Colombia. Her charity work is part of why Colombians see her as an ambassador, not only a star.

Juanes, born Juan Esteban Aristizábal Vásquez on 9 August 1972 in the Antioquia region, also holds four Grammys from nine nominations. He won at the 2009, 2013, 2022 and 2024 ceremonies.

He played the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize concert in Norway, the academy says. His Mi Sangre Foundation was set up to help Colombian victims of landmines.

Karol G, a Colombian reggaeton singer, won the 2024 Grammy for Best Música Urbana Album with Mañana Será Bonito. The academy lists three nominations, including one in 2026 for Tropicoqueta.

Her concert dates across the region show how far Colombian urban music now travels.

Fernando Botero and Colombian Art

Fernando Botero, born in Medellín in 1932, painted and sculpted people, animals and objects with swollen, rounded volumes. The style is recognisable at a glance, which made his work familiar far beyond Colombia.

He died at his home in Monaco on 15 September 2023, aged 91, the Bogotá city government announced. The city noted that it holds collections he donated, and that Medellín has a whole square of his sculptures.

That square, Plaza Botero, sits in central Medellín beside the Museo de Antioquia, the regional art museum. Its large bronzes are free to see from the street.

His work remains in the news in Colombia, including a recent report on one of his peace dove sculptures.

Sofía Vergara and Colombians on Screen

Sofía Vergara, born on 10 July in Barranquilla, is the Colombian actor best known to US television viewers. The Television Academy lists five Emmy nominations, though no win.

Four came for playing Gloria in the ABC comedy Modern Family, in every year from 2010 to 2013. The fifth came in 2024 for playing the drug trafficker Griselda Blanco in the Netflix series Griselda.

Her academy biography says she founded a charity in 2001, Peace and Hope for the Children of Colombia. It also says the charity donated a paediatric cancer pavilion in Barranquilla.

Barranquilla, the Caribbean port that produced both Vergara and Shakira, is also known for its annual carnival. It is a useful stop for visitors interested in the music behind both careers.

Egan Bernal, Mariana Pajón and Colombian Sport

Egan Bernal Gómez won the 2019 Tour de France for Team INEOS, the official Tour results show. He finished in 82 hours 57 minutes, one minute 11 seconds ahead of teammate Geraint Thomas.

Medellín-based outlet Colombia Reports called it the country’s first Tour title. Colombian papers including Portafolio, a Bogotá business daily, reported his win at the 2021 Giro d’Italia, cycling’s second major tour.

Mariana Pajón won BMX gold at the London 2012 Olympics. The foreign ministry called it only the second gold in Colombian Olympic history.

She won a second BMX gold at Rio 2016, Radio Nacional de Colombia, the public broadcaster, reported.

Caterine Ibargüen took triple-jump silver in London in 2012 and gold in Rio in 2016. Colombia won eight medals in Rio, including three golds, and finished 23rd in the medal table, its best result.

In football, James Rodríguez finished as top scorer of the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, Colombia Reports noted at the time. That tournament made him a global name.

How These Figures Shaped Colombia’s Global Image

For much of the 1980s and 1990s, many foreigners knew Colombia mainly through the drug war. Television series about traffickers kept that image alive long after the country changed.

The people in this guide offered another story. A Caribbean novelist, a peace-seeking president, Barranquilla pop and Medellín art each gave outsiders a reason to look again.

Even Griselda shows the tension: a Colombian actor earned an Emmy nomination playing a Colombian trafficker. The old story and the new talent share one frame.

Cycling and football did similar work for working-class and rural Colombia. Their stars gave millions of fans heroes who came from ordinary towns.

What It Means for US Readers

Most of these careers run through the United States, because the Grammys and Emmys are US awards. Vergara’s academy biography says she began on a US Spanish-language network before crossing over.

For travellers, the places behind the names can be visited. They include Medellín’s Plaza Botero, carnival city Barranquilla and the García Márquez birthplace in Aracataca.

For budgeting, the peso traded at COP 3,236 per US dollar on 9 October 2026 (open.er-api.com). So COP 100,000 is about US$31.

Check the US State Department’s Colombia travel advisory before any trip, since conditions vary by region. Medellín and Barranquilla are big cities with the usual urban precautions.

What Is Not Known

J Balvin, the reggaeton star often named alongside Shakira, is not profiled here. His award record could not be confirmed against the Recording Academy’s database in time.

Museum admission prices in Aracataca and Medellín were not confirmed at official sites. Check them directly before visiting.

James Rodríguez’s 2014 scoring title and Bernal’s 2021 Giro win rest on Colombian media reports. The official FIFA and Giro pages could not be read.
