  • The fee US$10,000 to issue and to renew; US$12,500 for express handling.
  • Other costs Five-year residence permit US$3,000; five-year investor or property visa US$4,000.

  • The catch The fee is not the investment: reports put the investment bar at US$5 million to US$10 million.

The Ethiopia golden visa is a 10-year residence permit for foreign investors, and its US$10,000 price tag is a fee. It is not the amount you must invest, and the agency had not started issuing it when we last checked.

Ethiopia’s immigration agency announced the permit in March and April 2026. This guide sets out what is confirmed about the Ethiopia golden visa, what it costs in US$ and what nobody has announced.

What the Golden Visa Is

The Ethiopia golden visa comes from the Immigration and Citizenship Service, the national immigration agency. Its deputy director-general, Gosa Demissie, described it on 29 March 2026 as a permit for foreign investors who strengthen the economy.

The permit is a standardized electronic card meant to spare investors repeated paperwork. The agency also announced a separate five-year visa for individuals and families who buy property.

Ethiopia wants more foreign investment, and the agency says the permit is part of that push. The long stay is meant to give investors an uninterrupted legal status.

What It Costs in US$

The agency’s director general, Selamawit Dawit, presented the fee list at the agency’s new headquarters in April 2026. The Ethiopia golden visa costs US$10,000, and renewing it after 10 years costs another US$10,000.

Express handling costs more, with reports putting the rush renewal at US$12,500. Faster processing of other permits within one to two days costs US$4,000 to US$4,500.

A five-year permanent residence permit costs US$3,000, which the agency says is about three times the earlier fee. A five-year investor visa costs US$4,000, and so does the five-year visa for property buyers.

A one-month investor visa starts from US$60, which is the cheapest paid category on the list. Fees are listed in US dollars, so there is no birr conversion to worry about.

Who Can Apply and the Investment Question

The agency says the Ethiopia golden visa is for foreign investors, and it describes them as high-impact investors. It has not published a plain list of who qualifies.

Reports of the investment threshold differ: in April the agency described the scheme as open to investors of US$5 million. July reports gave US$10 million, or US$5 million with local jobs.

The July reports say job quotas and the grounds for withdrawing a visa are still to be set. A directive with Ethiopia’s Ministry of Justice must be finished first.

Until that directive appears, treat any investment figure as provisional. Do not move money on the strength of a figure that the agency has not put in writing.

The Cheaper Residence Routes

Most Americans who stay in Ethiopia are not investors, so the smaller categories matter more. The five-year permanent residence permit at US$3,000 and the five-year property visa at US$4,000 are the realistic options.

The agency says it has already begun issuing property-based residential IDs and visas. The property visa is meant for people who buy or lease real estate, and it is the one category that exists today.

Ethiopians living abroad, including many Americans of Ethiopian descent, have their own category, the Ethiopian Origin ID card. The agency’s online portal lists it next to passports, visas and work permits.

What It Means for You

Tourists are not affected, because the Ethiopia golden visa is a residence permit and not a tourist visa. Our guides to Ethiopian Christmas 2027 and Timkat 2027 cover entry and safety for short visits.

Retirees, remote workers and small investors should not plan around the Ethiopia golden visa yet. Plan around the five-year permit or visa categories, and ask the agency which one fits your case.

Budget the fee in US$ before any lawyer or translation costs, which the agency does not set. Ask for every price in writing and keep the receipts.

Safety Before You Commit

The US State Department rates Ethiopia Level 3, Reconsider Travel, in its advisory dated 1 April 2026. It says the security situation in Addis Ababa is stable, but it warns that conditions may worsen without warning.

The same advisory lists exit bans and communications disruptions among the risks. Anyone planning a long stay should read it in full before signing a lease or moving money.

Large parts of the country are rated Level 4, Do Not Travel, including the Amhara, Tigray, Afar and Gambella regions. Our Ethiopia explainer sets out the background to the fighting.

How to Apply and Where to Check

The agency runs an online portal at immigration.gov.et for passports, visas and work permits. Its helpline is 8133, and its email address is [email protected].

Check the portal for the Ethiopia golden visa before you pay anyone. Be careful with agents who sell the permit now, because the agency has not said it is issuing it.

For the calendar of national holidays, which close government offices, see our Ethiopia holidays and events guide. Offices are shut on Ethiopian Christmas and Epiphany in January.

What Is Not Confirmed Yet

The start date is not announced, and we found no sign that the agency has issued a single golden visa. In April it said it would launch soon, and July reports say it plans to start by July 2027.

The investment threshold is not published, and reports give US$5 million and US$10 million. The treatment of spouses and children is also unknown.

We found no fee page on the agency’s portal, so the fee list rests on its public statements. Confirm each price on the official portal before you pay.
