Early 2024 Sees Notable Downturn in Argentina’s Economy

At the start of 2024, Argentina faced a challenging economic landscape, with its GDP shrinking by 5.1% from the year prior.

This was a time of financial recalibration under the leadership of President Javier Milei.

Reports from the National Institute of Statistics and Census (INDEC) pinpointed significant reductions in both personal and government spending, which decreased by 6.7% and 5% respectively.

Investment tumbled by 23.4%, with imports also declining by 20.1%. In contrast, exports surged by 26.1%, offering a glimmer of hope amidst widespread declines.

From one quarter to the next, the nation’s economy slipped further, contracting by an additional 2.6%.

Both investment and imports fell by 12.6% and 12.1% respectively, underscoring persistent economic stress.

The impact varied widely across different sectors. The construction industry suffered the most, seeing a steep 19.7% drop.

Manufacturing was not far behind, with a 13.7% decrease, followed by financial services and the wholesale and retail sectors, which declined by 13% and 8.7% respectively.

However, not all was grim. Agriculture and related fields like livestock and forestry bucked the trend, registering increases of 10.2% and 8%.

The fishing industry improved by 3.2%. Education, health, and public services saw modest gains ranging from 0.8% to 1.6%.

The backdrop to these figures is a series of rigorous fiscal policies aimed at restructuring public finances and fortifying the macroeconomic framework.

These included a decisive devaluation of the peso in the preceding December and consistent cuts to public expenditure.
