Cuba refutes US claims of Chinese espionage base on the island

By · June 13, 2023 · 1 min read

Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez Parrilla has rebuffed allegations by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken concerning the existence of a purported Chinese espionage base in Cuba.

On his Twitter account, Parrilla stated that Blinken’s claims were unfounded and emphasized Cuba’s clear and categorical position on the issue.

Blinken had previously announced that China upgraded its intelligence-gathering facilities in Cuba in 2019.

Since President Joe Biden’s administration assumed office in January 2021, he was briefed on Beijing’s efforts to expand its overseas intelligence collection operations.

Parrilla argued that such accusations are designed to justify the continuation of the US-imposed economic, commercial, and financial blockade on Cuba, which has been in place for over six decades.

In addition, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin accused Washington of circulating inconsistent and contradictory information and dismissed US claims about China operating a spy base in Cuba.

Parrilla echoed this sentiment, suggesting it to be another disinformation operation amidst the long-standing US hostility against Cuba.
