Colombia’s Market Hits Resistance as Peso Holds Steady Ahead of Global Policy Signals
Colombia’s stock market closed slightly higher on August 20, with the MSCI COLCAP index ending at 1,855.31, according to the Bolsa de Valores de Colombia.
The modest 0.10 percent gain came with trading volumes of 153.1 billion pesos, reflecting a cautious tone as global investors await the U.S. Federal Reserve’s policy outlook from the Jackson Hole meeting this week.
The session showed a clear divergence in performance. Financials lifted the index, with Corficolombiana up 5.36 percent, Banco de Bogotá advancing 2.76 percent, and Grupo Aval Pref adding 2.52 percent.
Energy and utilities lagged, as Canacol fell 2.37 percent, Celsia dropped 1.64 percent, and Promigas slipped 1.33 percent. Canacol’s weakness followed disappointing second-quarter production results and continued concerns about its natural gas output.
The Colombian peso held firm. The official exchange rate for August 21 is 4,025.51 pesos per U.S. dollar, published by the Banco de la República.

This rate is nearly unchanged from Wednesday’s close, showing a stable currency despite global volatility. Analysts surveyed by the central bank still expect the peso to trade near 4,050 by year-end, indicating steady near-term expectations.
Commodities played an important role. Brent crude traded near 67 dollars per barrel after U.S. inventories fell by six million barrels, boosting demand expectations.
This supported energy-linked sentiment in Colombia, although not enough to lift Canacol shares. Copper remained near 4.43 dollars per pound, a softer level compared to early summer, limiting upside for material-linked firms.
The policy backdrop also shaped investor positioning. The central bank has kept its key interest rate unchanged at 9.25 percent since May, maintaining a restrictive stance against inflation.
This stability has favored banks, which benefited from higher margins and improved earnings visibility, explaining their leadership in Wednesday’s session.

Charts show an important technical moment. On the four-hour timeframe, the COLCAP trades above its moving averages, but its relative strength index stands near 77, signaling overbought conditions.
The daily chart places resistance close to 1,860, while support sits near 1,770. This suggests a likely short pause or consolidation after strong gains since mid-July.
The peso’s chart also shows limited downside momentum. The daily relative strength index holds around 45, and the MACD indicator suggests fading selling pressure. Support rests between 3,950 and 4,000 pesos, while resistance clusters between 4,060 and 4,100.
Global cues remain crucial. Asian markets traded mixed overnight as investors wait for Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell’s speech on Friday. U.S. rate cuts remain largely priced in for September, keeping risk appetite alive but fragile.
The next test for Colombia will come from global policy signals and commodity markets, which will likely decide if the index can break past resistance or shift into a consolidation phase.
