Colombian Stocks Reach Fresh Five-Year Peak, Outpacing Regional Markets in July Surge

Colombia’s COLCAP index closed at 1,772.88 on July 31, 2025, its highest in five years, after rising 0.74% in a single session.

The month wrapped up with a robust 5.86% gain—far outpacing regional rivals and even the S&P 500, which rose just 2.2% in July. This strong performance marks Colombia as a regional standout, though the story beneath the surface is more nuanced.

Several leading stocks drove gains. Grupo de Inversiones Suramericana SA Pref rose 2.16%, Mineros SA jumped 1.99% after hitting a multi-year peak, and Grupo Aval Acciones Pref climbed 1.75%.

Yet, the rally showed cracks: Grupo Argos SA Pref fell 4.49%, its ordinary shares dropped 3.48%, and Canacol Energy lost 2.15%. These moves reflected investor rotation away from recent winners and profit taking.

Technical analysis offers key insights. The index stays firmly above its 50- and 200-day moving averages, making the trend upward and strong.

However, the Relative Strength Index (RSI)—now above 67—signals the market is overheating. The price sits at the upper edge of its Bollinger Band, a classic warning of high volatility and potential for a short-term pullback.

The MACD indicator remains positive, showing ongoing momentum, but has started to flatten, suggesting the market’s upward surge may have less room left.

Broader conditions set the table for this rally and its risks. Colombia’s economy has shown improvement through lower inflation and unemployment, as confirmed by public data. Foreign investors have favored Colombian equities over bonds, fueling the recent gains.

However, warning signs are flashing globally. The NDQ Global Liquidity Index—tracked visually as a yellow line on technical charts—moved sharply lower.

This decline historically signals less cash in global markets, often leading to riskier environments and profit-taking in emerging markets like Colombia. With a strengthening US dollar and uncertainties in global trade policy and commodities, investors are growing cautious.
