Argentina’s Stock Surge Pauses Amid Global Tensions
Argentina’s main stock index, the S&P MERVAL, slipped on July 31, 2025, following a month-long climb that pushed it close to record highs.
The market closed at 2,319,510 points, a modest drop that signals a change in mood after weeks of enthusiastic buying, particularly in the energy and banking sectors.
Trading data show clear signs of profit-taking as investors moved to lock in gains built up in July. Leading energy firms, such as Pampa Energía and YPF, which earlier drove the rally, posted losses as bullish momentum faded.
Financials like BBVA Banco Francés and Banco Macro saw their recent strength wane as well. Among the largest losers, Domec SA dropped by 7.3% as investors cashed out after sharp gains, and Polledo SA declined 2.6%.
Sociedad Comercial del Plata faced fresh selling, underscoring cautious sentiment. This local pause happened as global nerves rattled markets worldwide. U.S. and European indices slipped, unsettled by new U.S. tariff announcements and trade uncertainty.

The Global Liquidity Index—which tracks the biggest central banks—rose, showing tighter financial conditions that usually prompt investors to pull back from risky markets like Argentina.
Argentina’s MERVAL Pauses Amid Global Risk Aversion
As a result, Argentina underperformed regional peers such as Brazil and Mexico, whose main indices held steady or saw slight gains. Technical market signals point to a short-term cooling.
The Relative Strength Index (RSI) hovered above 70 but ticked downward, a classic sign of reduced momentum. The MACD indicator flattened, hinting that the prior bullish trend has paused.
Although the MERVAL stayed above its key long-term moving averages, the daily candlestick turned red, cementing the day’s step back. Volume, while still high, didn’t carry the conviction of earlier sessions, and ETF flows turned mildly negative.
Behind these numbers lies a deeper story. As global risk appetite dipped in response to policy moves and liquidity tightening abroad, investor caution returned in Buenos Aires.
This does not erase the MERVAL’s bigger-picture uptrend, driven by Argentina’s strong energy exports and demand for stocks as a hedge against persistent inflation and currency weakness.
But the day’s market action showed that even robust rallies encounter reality checks, especially when outside shocks and profit motives meet head-on.
In summary, Argentina’s stock market took a breather after a powerful run, mirroring a global pullback as investors reassessed risks.
The story is not one of collapse, but of natural market adjustment as local optimism faces the realities of a shifting international environment.
