Brazil’s agricultural production will reach a record level this year -IBGE

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Agribusiness will remain an important component of the Brazilian economy in 2022.

Estimated production of cereals, pulses, and oilseeds this year is expected to reach a record 271.9 million tons, 7.4% more than in 2021, according to the forecast, part of the Systematic Survey of Agricultural Production (LSPA) released Thursday (Oct. 02) by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE).

In addition to production, the area to be harvested has also increased. According to the survey, there are 71.2 million hectares. This is 2.6 million hectares more than the 2021 area.

The main crops to be harvested are rice, corn, and soybeans. These crops account for 93% of the estimated production and 87% of the area to be farmed.

“For corn, IBGE estimates a harvest of 109.9 million tons, up 0.9% from the previous month’s estimate and up 25.2% from 2021 production. This corn production in 2022 is also a new record in the historical series of the IBGE,” explains the head of the survey, Carlos Barradas.

Soybean production is expected to reach 131 million tons, down 2.3% from last year’s production. Nevertheless, the product remains the country’s main commodity and is expected to account for 48.5% of total cereal, legume, and oilseed production.

Among the states, Mato Grosso is the largest cereal producer in the country, with a 28.5% share, followed by Rio Grande do Sul (14.1%), Paraná (13.1%), Goiás (9.9%), Mato Grosso do Sul (8.5%) and Minas Gerais (6.2%). These six states together account for 80% of national production.

SURVEY

The systematic survey of agricultural production provides estimates of the area cultivated, the area harvested, the quantity produced, and the average yield of selected products based on criteria of economic and social importance to the country.

The survey allows tracking of each crop in the current harvest, from the planting intention stage to the end of harvest, as well as forecasting the following year’s harvest.
