Venezuela and Paraguay Resume Diplomatic Relations

Venezuela and Paraguay have jointly announced the restoration of their diplomatic and consular relations.

This development follows discussions between the presidents of both countries.

In a joint statement, the foreign ministries of Venezuela and Paraguay shared that Presidents Nicolás Maduro of Venezuela and Santiago Peña of Paraguay mutually agreed to accredit ambassadors in the coming days.

The official statement highlighted both countries’ commitment to restarting bilateral relations.

They emphasize respect for fundamental principles like equality of rights, self-determination, non-interference in internal affairs, and solidarity.

The presidents reaffirmed their dedication to Latin American integration and unity. They also expressed a desire to maintain the natural friendship and solidarity between their peoples.

Paraguay’s former President, Mario Abdo Benítez, previously severed diplomatic ties between these two South American nations in January 2019.

This occurred during his tenure from 2018 to 2023. Additionally, he had ordered the closure of the Paraguayan embassy in Caracas.

Benítez’s decision coincided with Maduro’s inauguration for a second term.

It also occurred amidst Juan Guaidó, the former deputy, proclaiming himself as Venezuela’s “interim president.”
