Paraguay’s 2022 GDP: Modest Growth Amidst Challenges

The Central Bank of Paraguay (BCP) recently announced a modest 0.2 percent increase in the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP) for 2022.

This growth occurred in both constant and current terms, with a notable 8.2 percent rise in current value.

This modest growth stemmed from various factors. Critical sectors like agriculture, manufacturing, and construction experienced downturns.

Yet, sectors such as electricity and services saw growth.

Agriculture, part of the primary sector, witnessed a 12.5 percent decline. Due to poor weather conditions, this drop resulted from reduced soy, rice, and cassava production.

The manufacturing sector also faced a slight reduction of 0.1 percent. This decline was primarily in oil processing, metal manufacturing, and food production.

In contrast, certain industries showed progress. The sugar, chemical, paper, leather, and textile sectors all reported positive growth.

These improvements helped balance the overall economic performance.

The construction sector decreased by 3.2 percent in 2022. This decline was largely due to slowed private and public construction activities.

On the other hand, the electricity and water sector grew by 7.8 percent. Improved rainfall positively impacted the Paraná River’s conditions.

Earlier in the year, a drought had adversely affected water levels, impacting production. However, conditions improved later in the year.

The services sector also expanded by 1.5 percent. Growth drivers were hotels, restaurants, business services, and trade.

Nonetheless, this was partly offset by declines in transportation, telecommunications, and financial services.

Despite mixed sector performances, Paraguay’s economy demonstrated resilience in 2022.

This resilience reflects the country’s capacity to adapt and overcome economic challenges. The balanced economic scenario in various sectors indicates a stable economy.
