Jazz Night at JazzB

Thursday is when São Paulo’s live-music week peaks, and JazzB in República is the pick: tonight the Jônatas Sansão Quinteto plays a tribute to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers from 9 pm. A serious, intimate jazz room in the heart of the city — reserve, and go early.

Tonight at a Glance

JazzB · República The Jônatas Sansão Quinteto’s Art Blakey tribute, from 9 pm. The city’s serious jazz room, at its midweek best.

SPIM festival · ten venues São Paulo Independent Music runs tonight through Saturday across ten houses — pick a stage and follow the indie circuit around the city.

Karol Conká & Michelle Abu · Sesc Pompeia An album launch with a famous guest, from 8 pm. Affordable Sesc pricing; also FBC’s rap on another Pompeia stage.

Casa de Francisca · three rooms (Sé) Ciro Belluci (jazz), Jáder (pop and MPB) and Os Originais do Sample (Porão) all play tonight from 9:30 pm.

Note: The Kaurismäki retrospective and Festival Filmes Incríveis both closed last night — the cinema hook is done for this run.

Tonight, Thursday 13 August 2026, is when São Paulo’s live-music week hits its stride. Jazz leads — JazzB has an Art Blakey tribute — but the city is packed: the SPIM independent-music festival takes over ten venues, Karol Conká guests at a Sesc Pompeia album launch, Casa de Francisca runs three rooms, and Blue Note is back after its early-week break. A great night to just pick a room and go.

What’s On Tonight

Jônatas Sansão Quinteto at JazzB — Rua General Jardim 43, Vila Buarque (near República). One of São Paulo’s dedicated jazz rooms hosts a tribute to Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers tonight from 9 pm — hard bop played by a tight quintet in an intimate basement club. Reserve a table and arrive early; JazzB fills on a Thursday.

SPIM — São Paulo Independent Music — the city’s new independent-music festival runs 12 to 16 August across ten houses (Casa Natura, Cine Joia, Hangar 110, Bar Alto, Casa Rockambole, La Iglesia, Porta and more). Tonight’s circuit includes Garage Fuzz with Deb and The Mentals at La Iglesia and more across the west side. Tickets are sold per night, so you can build your own route.

Karol Conká guests at Michelle Abu’s album launch — Sesc Pompeia (Teatro), from 8 pm. A strong MPB-and-rap bill at one of the city’s best cultural venues, with rapper FBC also playing the Comedoria stage tonight. Sesc pricing keeps it affordable.

Casa de Francisca, three rooms — Rua Quintino Bocaiúva 22, Sé. From 9:30 pm: Ciro Belluci (jazz) in Sala B, Jáder (pop and MPB) in the Salão, and Os Originais do Sample with Tietê in the Porão. Couvert usually R$40 (US$8) to R$70 (US$14); reserve.

The Circuit: When to Go Where

Early evening (7–8 pm) — Start with an album launch at Sesc Pompeia, or an early drink in República near JazzB.

Dinner (8 pm) — Eat around Vila Buarque or Consolação, both walkable to the jazz and to Sé.

Main event (9–9:30 pm) — JazzB’s Art Blakey tribute, or Casa de Francisca in Sé. Both are late-starting, seated rooms.

Indie option — Follow the SPIM circuit to a west-side house (Vila Madalena, Pinheiros) for something louder.

Late (11:30 pm) — Thursday builds toward the weekend, but keep an eye on last trains; rideshare home from Sé and República.

Neighbourhoods at a Glance

República / Vila Buarque: Central and buzzing at night, home to JazzB and a cluster of bars. Lively, but keep the usual city awareness on quiet streets.

Paulista / Consolação: The city’s spine — Blue Note and a short walk to everything. Safe and well-lit.

Sé / Centro: Historic core, home to Casa de Francisca. Grand by day, very quiet after dark — rideshare door-to-door.

Pinheiros / Vila Madalena: Bohemian and bar-heavy, with forró at Canto da Ema and SPIM stages. Walkable and lively.

Pompeia / Barra Funda: Sesc Pompeia anchors the culture; the club district next door peaks at the weekend.

LGBTQ+ Tonight

Building toward the weekend — São Paulo’s big queer club nights are Friday and Saturday, mostly in Barra Funda and around Frei Caneca, but Thursday has warm-up parties too — check listings.

Everyday-friendly spaces — The Augusta corridor and Frei Caneca are broadly mixed and welcoming any night, and tonight’s music rooms are all easy, inclusive options.

Money & How Paying Works

Couvert and cover: Jazz and music rooms charge a per-person cover — around R$30 (US$6) to R$60 (US$12) at JazzB, R$40 (US$8) to R$70 (US$14) at Casa de Francisca. It’s on your bill.

Sesc pricing: Sesc venues are much cheaper — often R$12 (US$2) to R$40 (US$8), with the lowest rate for Sesc cardholders.

Cash, card and Pix: Cards and Pix are widely accepted, but carry R$100 (US$20) to R$200 (US$40) in cash for smaller bars.

Tipping: 10% is standard and often added as ‘serviço’. Check before you double-tip.

Getting Home Safe

Metro: The last trains leave between midnight and 12:30 am, depending on the line. Check the ViaQuatro and Metrô SP apps before you rely on it.

Rideshare: 99 and Uber are reliable and widely used. Wait in a lit, busy spot, especially leaving Sé and República.

Centro at night: The Sé and República areas can be lively but have quiet pockets. Stick to lit main roads and take a rideshare door-to-door.

Phone awareness: Don’t walk with your phone out on quiet streets. Duck into a bar to check maps or call a car.

Paulista and Pinheiros: Both stay busier and better-lit, but keep the usual city awareness late at night.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are the film festivals still on?

No — the Kaurismäki retrospective at CineSesc and the Festival Filmes Incríveis at Cine Belas Artes both closed last night, 12 August. Tonight is all about live music instead.

I’ve just landed at GRU tonight. Can I still catch live music?

Yes. JazzB’s set starts at 9 pm and Casa de Francisca at 9:30 pm — both about a 40-minute rideshare from the airport, in the central Paulista corridor. Reserve first.

What is SPIM?

São Paulo Independent Music — a new festival of independent music, running 12 to 16 August across ten venues, with tickets sold per night so you can build your own route. Expect indie rock, shoegaze, hardcore and more.

What’s the dress code on a Thursday?

Smart-casual for JazzB and Casa de Francisca; jeans are fine everywhere. Comfortable clothes for the SPIM houses and the forró, and a light layer for air-conditioned rooms.
