If You Only Go to One Place

Inocentes at Flipei, 8pm, free

One of the founding bands of São Paulo punk plays its 1986 album “Pânico em SP” from start to finish at the Espaço Cultural Elza Soares in Campos Elíseos. No ticket, no door charge.

Tonight at a Glance

Inocentes, Espaço Cultural Elza Soares 8pm, free. “Pânico em SP” played in full, 40 years after its release.

Free after-party, Boteco Pratododia From 10pm, free. DJ sets from Rick Blackman, Carol Selectah and Julião Pimenta in Barra Funda.

Flipei talks, all free From 1.30pm across two venues in Campos Elíseos — drugs policy, women and work, new books. All in Portuguese.

Blue Note São Paulo Two sets most nights on Avenida Paulista. Check tonight’s bill on the venue’s own site before you go.

This weekend: Anitta The Equilibrivm tour plays Parque Villa-Lobos on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August. Saturday has sold out; Sunday is the added date.

Thursday is a better weeknight than usual in São Paulo, and almost all of it costs nothing. Flipei, the pirate book fair run by Brazil’s independent publishers — the one São Paulo city hall pushed out of its venue in 2025 — has the punk band Inocentes playing a 40-year-old album from start to finish at 8pm, free, and a free DJ after-party from 10pm. Everything else worth planning around is at the weekend, and needs a ticket.

What’s On Tonight

Inocentes play “Pânico em SP” in full — Espaço Cultural Elza Soares, Alameda Eduardo Prado 460-474, Campos Elíseos. 8pm, free entry. Inocentes are one of the bands that built São Paulo punk in the early 1980s, and “Pânico em SP” — a record about violence and policing in the city — turns 40 this year. They play it complete. The show opens the second night of Flipei, the Festa Literária Pirata das Editoras Independentes, which runs from 5 to 9 August. Metrô Marechal Deodoro (Line 3-Red) is about 850m away; Terminal Princesa Isabel is closer still.

Free after-party at Boteco Pratododia — Rua Barra Funda 34, Barra Funda. From 10pm, free entry. Rick Blackman, Carol Selectah and Julião Pimenta play back to back after the Inocentes set. It is a 450m walk from Metrô Marechal Deodoro, and about 15 minutes on foot from the Elza Soares venue.

Flipei talks, free all afternoon and evening — at the Espaço Cultural Elza Soares, 2pm on whether psychoactive drugs can improve public health, with the writer Geovani Martins among the panel, and 6.15pm on women and work. Across the street at the Café Colombiano (Alameda Eduardo Prado 493), the American peace campaigner Medea Benjamin, co-founder of Code Pink, presents her book on Iran at 1.30pm. The fair itself — more than 150 independent publishers, over 60 panels — runs alongside all of it. Everything is free and everything is in Portuguese.

Blue Note São Paulo, if Flipei is not your thing — Av. Paulista 2073, Conjunto Nacional, second floor. The São Paulo branch of the New York jazz club runs two sets most nights and mixes touring names with tribute acts, so the character of the evening changes completely from one night to the next. The line-up and the door times are published show by show on the venue’s own site, and tables are booked there too. Worth ten seconds of checking rather than turning up on spec.

The Circuit: When to Go Where

From 1.30pm — the Flipei talks run through the afternoon in Campos Elíseos, free and walk-in. If you read Portuguese, the book fair itself is worth an hour before anything else starts.

6.15pm — the last debate of the day at the Elza Soares venue, on women and work, before the room turns over for the band.

8pm — Inocentes at the Espaço Cultural Elza Soares. No ticket, no door charge, and the room fills.

10pm — the free after-party begins at Boteco Pratododia in Barra Funda, a short walk from the show.

Around midnight — the metro shuts. Marechal Deodoro serves both Campos Elíseos and Barra Funda, so if you are staying out past that, plan on a car.

Scenes & Sounds

Punk — São Paulo’s punk scene is older and better documented than most visitors expect, and tonight is a straightforward way into it: a founding band playing a 40-year-old record about this city, for free, in a cultural centre named after Elza Soares. Where: Espaço Cultural Elza Soares (Alameda Eduardo Prado 460-474, Campos Elíseos)

Jazz, MPB and tribute nights — Blue Note runs two sets most nights, mixing touring names with tribute acts, and the programme turns over weekly. It is the most comfortable room in the city and the easiest to reach. Where: Blue Note São Paulo (Av. Paulista 2073, Conjunto Nacional)

DJ sets and independent dance floors — the free after-party in Barra Funda is the cheapest way to see what the city’s independent DJ scene sounds like away from the big clubs. Where: Boteco Pratododia (Rua Barra Funda 34, Barra Funda)

Live Brazilian music, jazz and blues — Bourbon Street in Moema has been running live music since 1992 and keeps a Thursday-to-Saturday show schedule, with weekend afternoon sets over lunch. Check the line-up on its site before you set off. Where: Bourbon Street Music Club (Rua dos Chanés 127, Moema)

Coming this weekend — Sara Hebe, the Argentine rapper, plays Flipei’s Friday night at Sol y Sombra 13 in Bela Vista at 10pm, ticketed. Saturday’s baile funk with Estora Caixa and Funkeiros Cults is at Central 1926, also 10pm and ticketed. And Anitta’s Equilibrivm tour takes Parque Villa-Lobos on Saturday and Sunday. Where: Sol y Sombra 13 (Rua Treze de Maio 180, Bela Vista), Central 1926 (Praça da Bandeira 137), Parque Villa-Lobos (Alto de Pinheiros)

Pick Your Night

Date night: Blue Note São Paulo. Check the night’s bill, book a table, arrive before the first set and eat during the show. It is the most comfortable room in the city for a first night out and the easiest to reach, straight off Metrô Consolação.

Solo and safe: Bourbon Street in Moema. Sit at the bar, let the band do the work, take a car home. Moema is quiet and residential and the trip back is uncomplicated.

Meet locals: Flipei. Free entry, a crowd that came to argue about books, and a bar. If your Portuguese is limited, the music is the easy part of the evening.

Dance: the after-party at Boteco Pratododia from 10pm, free. Small, loud and entirely unglamorous, which is the appeal.

Chill and conversation: the Café Colombiano side of Flipei, where the afternoon panels run in a smaller room across the street from the main stage.

Where to Go

Espaço Cultural Elza Soares — Campos Elíseos

An independent cultural space in the centre, run as part of a cultural hub in Campos Elíseos, and Flipei’s main stage this week. Named after the singer Elza Soares.

Tonight: Debates at 2pm and 6.15pm; Inocentes play “Pânico em SP” in full at 8pm. Free entry throughout.

This week: Flipei runs here from 5 to 9 August, with the book fair alongside the stage.

Cost: Free.

Address: Alameda Eduardo Prado 460-474, Campos Elíseos

Festival site: flipei.org

Getting there: Metrô Marechal Deodoro (Line 3-Red), about 850m; Terminal Princesa Isabel about 750m. Campos Elíseos is a rough patch of the centre at night, so take a car door to door after the show.

Good to know: No booking and no ticket. Everything is in Portuguese.

Boteco Pratododia — Barra Funda

A plain corner bar in Barra Funda that Flipei is using for its late nights. Small room, loud sound system, no pretensions.

Tonight: Free after-party from 10pm with Rick Blackman, Carol Selectah and Julião Pimenta.

Cost: Free entry; drinks at boteco prices.

Address: Rua Barra Funda 34, Barra Funda

Getting there: Metrô Marechal Deodoro (Line 3-Red), 450m. The last trains go around midnight, so plan a car home.

Good to know: Cash and Pix are the quickest way to pay at a bar this size.

Blue Note São Paulo — Avenida Paulista

The São Paulo outpost of the New York jazz club, on the second floor of the Conjunto Nacional. A plush, dark room with genuinely good sound and a full dinner menu.

Tonight: Two sets, as on most nights. The bill and the times are published show by show on the venue’s site.

This week: Shows on most nights, usually two a night, listed individually on the site.

Cost: A couvert artístico is charged per person and is set act by act; it is shown with each show on the site. Full dinner menu on top. All cards.

Address: Av. Paulista 2073, Conjunto Nacional, second floor, Consolação

Bourbon Street Music Club — Moema

A São Paulo institution since 1992, mixing New Orleans decor with live Brazilian music, jazz, blues and soul in a supper-club room.

Schedule: Evening shows Thursday to Saturday, with reservations; lunchtime sets from 1pm at weekends. Check the site for the night’s act before you set off.

Good to know: Reserve through the site or by WhatsApp. Smart-casual.

This Weekend

Anitta, Equilibrivm tour — Parque Villa-Lobos, Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 August. The tour built around her April album, staged as a single immersive show rather than a run of hits. The Saturday date has sold out; Sunday was added and still has tickets. Arena tickets start at R$100 half-price and R$200 full (about US$20 and US$39); Front Stage starts at R$180 and R$360 (about US$35 and US$70). Prices rise between batches. Tickets are on Ingresse. The park is at Avenida Professor Fonseca Rodrigues 2001, Alto de Pinheiros.

Flipei’s Friday and Saturday nights. Friday: Sara Hebe with DJ Fabi Caruso and Festa Papaya, 10pm at Sol y Sombra 13, Rua Treze de Maio 180, Bela Vista, ticketed. Saturday: a baile funk with Estora Caixa and Funkeiros Cults, 10pm at Central 1926, Praça da Bandeira 137, ticketed, alongside a one-day showing of part of “Funk: um grito de ousadia e liberdade”, the exhibition curated by Renata Prado that the Museu da Língua Portuguesa closed early in May after attacks from far-right members of congress. It can be seen on Saturday only.

Neighbourhoods at a Glance

Campos Elíseos: A once-grand central district, now poor and heavily policed, and the address of several independent cultural spaces. Fine to be in for an event, but arrive and leave by car.

Barra Funda: Industrial and half-converted, with warehouse clubs and corner bars. Quiet and empty-feeling on foot at night; the metro station is the reference point.

Avenida Paulista: The city’s spine. Museums by day, live music and cocktails by night, and the easiest area for a newcomer to move around after dark.

Moema: Leafy and well-off, with supper clubs and wine bars. A slower pace, and the obvious choice for dinner with live music.

Pinheiros and Vila Madalena: The bar-hopping districts — botequins, craft beer and small live rooms, with the shortest walk between one place and the next.

LGBTQ+ São Paulo

Rua Frei Caneca and Largo do Arouche — the two dependable LGBTQ+ areas in the centre. Frei Caneca, a ten-minute walk down from Avenida Paulista, is a strip of bars and clubs that runs through the week and builds from Thursday. Largo do Arouche, closer to República, is older, more mixed and cheaper. Neither needs planning: go, walk the street, pick a door. Flipei’s own programme is heavily queer and trans in its make-up, and its Campos Elíseos venues are a short car ride from either.

Money & How Paying Works

Conversions in this guide use R$5.12 to the US dollar, the rate on 6 August 2026.

The comanda is the system to learn: most clubs and bars give you a card at the door, you buy drinks on it, and you settle the total on the way out. Losing it carries a fixed penalty.

Couvert artístico is a per-person music charge, usually R$30–R$120 (about US$6–23), added to the bill at live-music venues. It is separate from the food and the service charge.

Cards work almost everywhere, but Pix, the instant bank transfer, is faster and sometimes cheaper at the door. Small bars still prefer cash.

Tipping: 10% is standard and is usually already on the bill as “serviço”. Check before adding more.

Getting Home Safe

The metro closes around midnight from Sunday to Friday and 1am on Saturday, and last trains leave the terminals about 15 minutes earlier. Marechal Deodoro is the station for tonight’s two main venues.

Uber and 99 work well across the city. Choose a lit pickup point — a petrol station or a hotel entrance — and share the trip with someone.

Fares can double between 1am and 4am. If your venue is far from where you are staying, leaving half an hour before closing is cheaper.

Keep your phone in a pocket rather than on the table. Grabs from open terraces are a known problem in the centre and along Paulista.

Use cash machines inside bank branches or shopping centres, not standalone units on the street after dark.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a ticket for tonight’s Inocentes show?

No. The show at the Espaço Cultural Elza Soares starts at 8pm and entry is free, as is the DJ after-party at Boteco Pratododia from 10pm. Both are part of Flipei, which is free throughout.

What is a comanda card?

A plastic card handed to you at the door. Every drink is charged to it during the night and you pay the total when you leave. Losing it means a fixed penalty, so keep it somewhere safe.

Do I need to speak Portuguese to go out?

Not in the main expat areas. Staff around Paulista and Pinheiros often speak some English and menus at the bigger venues are bilingual. Tonight’s Flipei programme, though, is entirely in Portuguese; the music needs no translation, the talks do.
