Rio de Janeiro Nightlife Tonight — August 10, 2026

If You Only Go to One Place

Samba do Trabalhador at Clube Renascença

Monday looks quiet on paper, but Rio’s samba world is wide awake. Moacyr Luz’s Samba do Trabalhador has run every Monday for two decades at the Renascença Clube in Andaraí — gates from around 4:30 pm, samba from 5 pm. It is the most Carioca thing you can do on a Monday, and it’s cash-only, so come prepared.

Tonight at a Glance

Samba do Trabalhador · Andaraí The city’s most famous Monday roda, led by Moacyr Luz. Gates ~4:30 pm, samba from 5 pm, ends around 9 pm. About R$30 (US$6), cash only.

Roda de Samba da Pedra do Sal · Saúde Free open-air samba at the birthplace of Carioca samba, in the old port’s “Pequena África”. From about 7 pm on the stone steps. Bring cash for beer tokens.

CCBB Rio · Centro Open Mondays (closed Tuesdays) until 8 pm. Catch “Vik Muniz: A Olho Nu” before the port fills up — a strong culture warm-up in the historic centre.

Lapa The nightlife heart is quiet on a Monday — the big houses (Rio Scenarium, Circo Voador) run later in the week. Good for a low-key boteco nightcap under the Arcos, not a big night out.

Jazz TribOz in Lapa is the city’s dedicated jazz room, but it runs Wednesday to Saturday — not tonight. Note it for later in the week.

Tonight, Monday 10 August 2026, is a classic Rio Monday — slow on paper, but the samba is the whole point. The city’s two great weekly rodas run as they always do: Moacyr Luz’s Samba do Trabalhador in Andaraí and the free open-air roda at Pedra do Sal in the old port. Add an early exhibition at CCBB and you have a full, unhurried evening. They sit in different parts of the city, so realistically you pick one roda and commit.

What’s On Tonight

Samba do Trabalhador, led by Moacyr Luz — at the Renascença Clube, Rua Barão de São Francisco 54, Andaraí. Now in its third decade, this Monday-afternoon-into-evening roda is one of Rio’s essential experiences: a long table on a raised platform, top-tier instrumentalists, and a crowd that sings every word. Gates open around 4:30 pm and the samba runs to roughly 9 pm. Entry is about R$30 (US$6) and the club takes cash only — there’s no card at the door or the bar. Go early for a spot.

Roda de Samba da Pedra do Sal — at Largo João da Baiana, Saúde, in the port district known as Pequena África. This free, open-air Monday roda takes place at the literal birthplace of Carioca samba: musicians set up at the foot of the old stone steps and the crowd spreads across the largo with cold beer and caipirinhas. Music from about 7 pm. It’s free to attend, but drinks work on a cash token (ficha) system, so bring small bills. Arrive early if you want a good spot on the steps.

Vik Muniz: A Olho Nu at CCBB Rio — Rua Primeiro de Março 66, Centro. The Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil is one of the few major culture houses open on a Monday (it closes Tuesdays), running until 8 pm. The Vik Muniz retrospective is the headline show and pairs well with an early-evening walk through the historic centre before you head to the port. Tickets are free but must be reserved online in advance.

The Circuit: When to Go Where

Option A — The Andaraí night. Head to the Renascença Clube by around 5 pm for Samba do Trabalhador and stay put; this is an afternoon-into-evening event that winds down about 9 pm. Rideshare there and back — it’s a residential Zona Norte street.

Option B — The port night. Start at CCBB in Centro (before it closes at 8 pm), then walk or take a short ride to Pedra do Sal in Saúde for the 7 pm roda. Everything is within the revitalised port area, near Praça Mauá and the Museu do Amanhã.

Dinner (8 pm) — Around the port, grab petiscos and a cold beer at a botequim near the largo. In Centro, the Travessa do Comércio lanes near CCBB have old-school bars.

Late (10 pm) — Lapa is subdued on a Monday, but a boteco under the Arcos da Lapa is a fine, low-key nightcap. Don’t expect the weekend club crush.

Getting between them — Andaraí (Zona Norte) and the port (Centro) are far apart. Pick one roda; don’t try to do both in a night.

Scenes & Sounds

Samba — This is the Monday story. Samba do Trabalhador (Andaraí) and Pedra do Sal (Saúde) are the two great weekly rodas, both running tonight. Where: Clube Renascença (Andaraí), Pedra do Sal (Saúde). Trapiche Gamboa nearby runs live samba later in the week.

Choro — Rio’s intricate instrumental tradition turns up in bars and cultural centres, often mixed into samba nights and the port scene. Where: Pedra do Sal surrounds, Centro botecos, CCBB music programme.

MPB (Música Popular Brasileira) — Rio’s songbook lives in Lapa’s music houses and theatres, though most run Thursday to Saturday. Check listings for the week’s bigger names. Where: Lapa houses, Circo Voador, Theatro Municipal.

Jazz — TribOz in Lapa is the city’s dedicated jazz room, with two sets a night Wednesday to Saturday and a modest couvert. Not open Monday, but worth planning for. Where: TribOz (Lapa).

Electronic and clubs — Rio’s club nights are firmly a weekend affair. Save this energy for Friday and Saturday in Lapa and the port. Where: Lapa and the Gamboa/port district, Thursday to Saturday.

Cinema and culture — CCBB Rio is open tonight with the Vik Muniz show and an August cinema programme. Nationwide, the Harry Potter and La La Land anniversary re-releases are also in cinemas this month. Where: CCBB (Centro), Estação and Reserva Cultural (Botafogo), Cine Odeon (Cinelândia).

Pick Your Night

The most Rio thing tonight: Samba do Trabalhador at Renascença — a legendary weekly roda and a real slice of Carioca life.

Free and easy: Pedra do Sal — open-air, no ticket, feet on the cobbles, cold beer, and samba at the birthplace of the genre.

Culture first: CCBB Rio — the Vik Muniz exhibition, then a short walk to the port for the roda.

Quiet and cultured: A boteco in Botafogo or the Travessa do Comércio in Centro — petiscos, cold chope, conversation.

Dance till sunrise: Not a Monday thing in Rio. Save it for the weekend in Lapa or the port.

Where to Go

Clube Renascença (Samba do Trabalhador) — Andaraí

A historic Zona Norte social club that hosts Rio’s most celebrated Monday roda, led by Moacyr Luz. A warm, community feel and superb musicianship.

Tonight: Samba do Trabalhador. Gates around 4:30 pm, samba from 5 pm, ends about 9 pm.

Best time: Mondays only. Arrive by 5 pm for a seat before it fills.

Cost: Around R$30 (US$6) at the door. Cash only — no cards at the door or bar. Bring more cash for cold beer and bar food.

Address: Rua Barão de São Francisco 54, Andaraí

Getting there: Rideshare is easiest — it’s a residential street. Metro Uruguaiana or a ride from Zona Sul; go door-to-door after dark.

Good to know: Loud and joyful. It’s a raised-platform roda, so sightlines are good, but come early on a busy Monday.

Pedra do Sal — Saúde (Pequena África)

The stone steps in the old port where Carioca samba was born. A free, open-air Monday roda with a loose, spontaneous street-party energy.

Tonight: Roda de samba from about 7 pm. Musicians at the foot of the steps; crowd across the largo.

Best time: Mondays and Fridays are the big roda nights. Come early to grab a step.

Cost: Free to attend. Drinks run on a cash token (ficha) system — carry small bills. Beers roughly R$8–R$12 (US$2).

Address: Largo João da Baiana, Saúde

Getting there: VLT to the port, or metro Uruguaiana and a short walk/ride. Rideshare to and from after dark.

Good to know: Wear comfortable shoes — you’ll stand or perch on stone for hours. Keep an eye on your belongings in the crowd.

CCBB Rio — Centro

The Banco do Brasil’s grand cultural centre in a neoclassical landmark. Free, high-quality exhibitions, cinema and music — and open on Mondays.

Tonight: “Vik Muniz: A Olho Nu” plus other current shows. Open until 8 pm.

Best time: Wednesday to Monday, 9 am to 8 pm. Closed Tuesdays.

Cost: Free, but reserve timed tickets online in advance. Café on site.

Address: Rua Primeiro de Março 66, Centro

Website: ccbb.com.br/rio-de-janeiro

Getting there: Metro Uruguaiana or Carioca, short walk. VLT to the port also close.

Good to know: Centro empties after office hours — pair it with the port and use rideshare between stops at night.

TribOz — Lapa

A tiny, Australian-run jazz room and the city’s dedicated home for the genre. Intimate, serious about the music, easy to miss (no sign outside).

Tonight: Closed — TribOz runs Wednesday to Saturday, not Mondays. Note it for later in the week.

Best time: Two sets Wednesday to Friday (around 6 pm and 9 pm); Saturday around 8 pm and 9 pm.

Cost: Couvert roughly R$15–R$30 (US$3–US$6). Confirm the night’s act and times before going.

Address: Rua Conde de Lages 19, Lapa

Getting there: Metro Cinelândia, short walk into Lapa. Rideshare to the door — the street is small and easy to miss.

Good to know: Small room — reserve ahead for the better nights.

Circo Voador — Lapa

Rio’s beloved open-sided concert tent beside the Arcos da Lapa — a launchpad for Brazilian music since 1982. A key venue to check for the week ahead.

Tonight: No Monday show — Circo Voador programmes concerts later in the week. Check upcoming dates.

Best time: Show nights vary; most run Thursday to Sunday. Doors typically 8 pm.

Cost: Varies by act. Buy through official channels.

Address: Rua dos Arcos, s/n, Lapa

Getting there: Metro Cinelândia, about a 7-minute walk.

Good to know: Open-air sides — comfortable most of the year. Confirm the night’s line-up before heading over.

Trapiche Gamboa — Gamboa

A characterful live-music bar in a restored port-district building, long loved for its samba and MPB nights and unpretentious crowd.

Tonight: Likely closed on a Monday — Trapiche’s live nights skew midweek to weekend. Check before going.

Best time: Wednesday to Saturday evenings for live samba and MPB.

Cost: Couvert and drinks vary by night. Cash and card usually accepted.

Address: Rua Sacadura Cabral 155, Gamboa

Getting there: Near Praça Mauá; VLT to the port, then a short ride. Rideshare after dark.

Good to know: Same port district as Pedra do Sal — handy to combine later in the week.

Neighbourhoods at a Glance

Centro / Saúde / Gamboa (Pequena África): The port revival and the cradle of samba. Alive on a Monday for Pedra do Sal, but largely deserted otherwise after dark — travel door-to-door by rideshare.

Lapa: Rio’s nightlife heart under the Arcos — but a weekend beast. On Mondays it’s quiet; good for a boteco, not a big night.

Santa Teresa: Bohemian hilltop of cobbled lanes and artist bars. Charming and low-key; take a rideshare up and down.

Andaraí / Grande Tijuca (Zona Norte): Residential and local, home to the Renascença Clube. Not a stroll-around area at night — rideshare to the door.

Botafogo / Zona Sul: Botafogo has a buzzy boteco and bar scene that ticks over any night; Copacabana, Ipanema and Leblon are relaxed and walkable, if quieter culturally on a Monday.

LGBTQ+ Tonight

Weekend-led scene — Rio’s big queer parties, including the port-district clubs, are firmly Friday-and-Saturday affairs. Mondays are quiet on that front.

Everyday-friendly spaces — Lapa’s bars and the samba rodas are broadly mixed and welcoming. For a Monday, the rodas and Botafogo’s bars are your best bet; save the dedicated club nights for the weekend.

Money & How Paying Works

Cash for samba: Clube Renascença is cash-only at the door and the bar, and street rodas like Pedra do Sal use cash tokens (fichas) for drinks. Carry R$100–R$200 (US$20–US$40) in small bills.

Fichas (tokens): At many rodas and street bars you buy tokens first, then exchange them at the bar for drinks. Buy a few at a time and don’t lose them.

Couvert artístico: Music houses like TribOz add a per-person artistic charge (roughly R$15–R$30, US$3–US$6). It’s not a tip; it will be on your bill.

Cards and Pix: Cards and Pix are widely accepted in bars and restaurants, but the traditional samba venues are the big exception — assume cash there.

Tipping: 10% is usually added to the bill as ‘serviço’. Check before adding more.

Getting Home Safe

Metro: MetrôRio runs roughly 5 am to midnight Monday to Saturday. Check the last-train time for your line before you rely on it.

Rideshare: 99 and Uber are reliable and widely used, and are the safest way home from Andaraí and the port at night. Wait in a lit, busy spot.

Port and Centro at night: The area is lively during the Pedra do Sal roda but empties fast once it winds down. Leave with the crowd or call a car to the largo rather than walking to quiet streets.

Phone awareness: Don’t walk with your phone out on quiet streets. Duck into a bar to check maps or call a car.

Zona Norte logistics: Andaraí is residential and not a walk-around-at-night area. Go door-to-door by rideshare in both directions.

Frequently Asked Questions

I’ve just landed at GIG (Galeão) tonight. Can I still catch some samba?

On a Monday, yes — Pedra do Sal in the port runs until late and is roughly a 30–40 minute rideshare from Galeão. Samba do Trabalhador in Andaraí is closer to the airport side of town but winds down around 9 pm, so only if you land early. Either way, take a rideshare door-to-door and carry cash.

Do I need to speak Portuguese to enjoy a samba roda?

Not at all. The music does the work, and the crowds at both rodas are welcoming. Learn a couple of songs’ choruses if you can, but a smile, a cold beer and cash for the fichas are all you really need.

Is the port area safe at night for the Pedra do Sal roda?

During the Monday roda the largo is busy and lively, which makes it feel comfortable. The usual city sense applies: keep your phone and wallet secure, stay within the crowd, and take a rideshare to and from rather than walking out to empty streets afterwards.

What’s the dress code on a Monday night?

Casual and comfortable. Samba is relaxed — light clothes and shoes you can stand in for hours. There’s no dress code at the rodas; just bring cash and leave the valuables at home.
