Rembrandt Original “Biblical Figure” Exhibition Opens in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Featuring 78 original pieces by Dutch painter, printmaker and etcher Rembrandt Harmenszoon van Rijn, the free to the public exhibition, “Rembrandt e a figura bíblica” (“Rembrandt and the biblical figure”), was inaugurated at Centro Cultural Correios in Centro, Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday, December 17th.

Officially opened to the public on December 18th and running through February 22nd, the exhibition is divided into two main sections. The first chronicles the work and life of Rembrandt, considered one of the greatest painters and printmakers in art history. The second section features biblical and religious themes, subjects that fascinated Rembrandt.

Curated by Fernando Spaziani, the seventy-eight pieces are Rembrandt prints and etchings on loan from the Zorn Museum located in city of Mora, Sweden.

From 1626 to 1665, Rembrandt created approximately three hundred prints and etchings, rarely addressing the same themes in his prints as he did in his paintings.

The current exhibition features 52 pieces depicting religious themes of the Old and the New Testament, three landscapes, eleven portraits, including four self-portraits, three allegorical scenes and nine pieces of various themes.

“Bringing to Brazil a collection this important, represents the ability to show our population exceptional works, past works that remain absolutely relevant and contemporary”, curator Spaziani told Agência Brasil, adding, “The pieces are of high quality and will be greatly appreciated not only by the general public, but also by students, because they are a great teacher.”

Visiting hours for the exhibition are 12PM to 7PM on Tuesdays through Sundays. Entry is free.
