By · October 17, 2019 · 2 min read

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL –  The amount of oil waste removed from beaches in the Northeast by Petrobras since September 12th now totals over 200 tons, the state-owned company announced yesterday, October 16th.

The work is being carried out in support of the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (IBAMA), and the costs of cleaning activities will be reimbursed.

The body is in charge of operational decisions, while the state-owned company provides technical support and implements strategies.

The company activated five Environmental Defense Centers and nine Emergency Response Centers to address this environmental disaster.

The structures are positioned at strategic points in Brazil to ensure adequate response conditions to potential oil spills in the company’s locations, which is not the case with this oil spill on the Brazilian coast.

Analysis from the Petrobras Research Center attested that the crude oil polluting beaches in several Northeastern states since September is not produced in Brazil and has not been marketed or transported by Petrobras.
