A Free Football Festival in the Heart of the City

The centrepiece of Mexico City’s free World Cup broadcasts will be the official FIFA Fan Festival in the Zócalo, the capital’s historic main square. It will run for the full 39 days of the tournament, from 11 June to 19 July 2026.

Entry will be free and open to the public, subject to capacity controls and security checks. The site can hold roughly 60,000 fans across an area of about 14 acres, making it one of the largest gathering points of the entire 2026 tournament.

All 104 World Cup matches will be shown live on giant screens, including a central LED screen measuring around 510 square metres. City officials say it will be the largest screen of any fan festival across the three host nations.

What Fans Can Expect at the Zócalo

Beyond the football, the Zócalo will transform into a full cultural festival. Two major pre-tournament concerts are scheduled for 9 and 10 June, with live music, DJ sets and cultural performances continuing daily between matches.

Interactive football zones will offer penalty challenges and skills contests, while a dedicated gastronomic area will serve Mexican street food and international options. Official FIFA merchandise stands and sponsor activation areas will also be present.

The environment is designed to be family-friendly. Alcohol will not be sold at the official Zócalo fan festival, a policy confirmed by the host city manager Michel Bauer. Security personnel and medical services will be on site throughout the tournament.

A Borough-by-Borough Network of Free Viewing Sites

The free World Cup broadcasts extend well beyond the historic centre. The city government has organised 18 additional fan festivals across all 16 boroughs, all free to enter and requiring no prior registration.

Seven of these borough venues will show every match of the tournament, including Parque La Bombilla in Álvaro Obregón, Utopía Meyehualco in Iztapalapa, and Deportivo Xochimilco. Another 11 sites will focus on Mexico’s national team matches and other key fixtures.

Plaza Garibaldi, famous for its mariachi bands and located near the Centro Histórico, will also host a free viewing zone. Each borough site will offer giant screens, cultural activities, workshops and local food stands in an alcohol-free setting.

The Money Behind the Free World Cup Broadcasts

The total reported investment for the fan festival programme is 180 million pesos, roughly 10 million US dollars. Of that sum, 135 million pesos, about 7.5 million US dollars, covers the transmission rights to broadcast the matches in public spaces.

Mayor Clara Brugada has stated that these costs will not come from the public purse. According to city officials, 30 brands and sponsoring companies will reimburse the full 135 million pesos for the broadcast rights, meaning the programme will cost “not a single peso” to taxpayers.

This sponsorship model allows the city to offer an extensive free viewing network without drawing on public funds. For investors and business observers, it signals a pragmatic approach to managing the financial demands of hosting a global mega-event.

What About Paseo de la Reforma?

Despite early speculation, Paseo de la Reforma will not host a permanent free match-broadcast zone comparable to the Zócalo or the borough fan festivals. The iconic avenue will instead be used for special events and parades tied to the tournament.

A World Cup parade with floats, giant balloons and music is scheduled along Reforma shortly after the tournament begins, likely on Saturday 13 June. For watching matches near Reforma, fans will need to rely on private bars and restaurants or walk to nearby public sites like Plaza Garibaldi.

This distinction matters for visitors planning their stay. The free, city-run viewing experience is concentrated in the Zócalo and the borough venues, not along the capital’s most famous boulevard.

The Read-Through for Visitors, Expats and Business

For the millions of visitors expected in Mexico City during the tournament, the free fan festival network offers a reliable and cost-free way to watch matches in a secure, organised environment. The Zócalo site alone can absorb crowds of up to 60,000 people.

Expats and longer-term residents gain a citywide infrastructure of community viewing points, from Coyoacán to Xochimilco, that will operate daily for over a month. The alcohol-free policy and family focus make these spaces accessible to a broad audience.

From a business and investment perspective, the sponsorship-driven funding model is the key detail. By shifting the 135-million-peso rights cost entirely onto private brands, the city avoids adding World Cup-related spending to its balance sheet while still delivering a large-scale public programme.
