Key Facts

  • ASUR traffic ASUR reported 6,383,731 passengers in July 2026, down 1.9% year on year.
  • GAP traffic GAP reported a 3.9% increase in total terminal passenger traffic at its Mexico airports in July 2026.
  • OMA traffic OMA reported a 3.9% increase across its 13 airports, with domestic up 3.3% and international up 7.5%.
  • ASUR breakdown Mexico traffic fell 4.0% and Puerto Rico fell 5.1%, while Colombia rose 5.8%.
  • GAP hotspots Guadalajara rose 13.2% and Tijuana rose 7.2%, while Puerto Vallarta fell 12.1% and Los Cabos fell 6.9%.
  • GAP Jamaica Kingston rose 2.9%, but Montego Bay plunged 26.6% in July 2026.

July 2026 passenger data from Mexico’s three listed airport groups shows a clear split, with ASUR contracting while GAP and OMA expanded.

For anyone tracking Latin America’s largest aviation market, the July 2026 numbers from Mexico’s three listed airport operators offer a mixed picture: Mexican airport traffic rose for two of the three groups, while ASUR posted an outright decline, underscoring how regional exposure and route mix now matter more than a single national trend.

ASUR’s slide: Mexico and Puerto Rico weigh

ASUR, which operates airports in Mexico, Puerto Rico and Colombia, reported 6,383,731 passengers in July 2026, a 1.9% drop from the same month a year earlier. The decline was driven by weakness at home and in the Caribbean: Mexican airports saw traffic fall 4.0%, while Puerto Rico was down 5.1%. Only Colombia, where ASUR runs airports including Medellín, provided a bright spot, with traffic up 5.8%.

The Mexican contraction is notable because ASUR’s domestic network includes Cancún, the country’s busiest airport and a key gateway for international leisure travel. A 4.0% drop there suggests softer demand from both domestic and US-origin travellers, though the group did not break down the figures further in its July report. Puerto Rico’s decline, meanwhile, points to continued turbulence in that market, where ASUR has faced competition and shifting airline schedules.

GAP and OMA: growth on different engines

GAP, which serves the Pacific and northern border regions, reported a 3.9% increase in total terminal passenger traffic across its Mexican airports in July 2026 — though its group total, which includes its Jamaican airports, rose just 1.2%, dragged down by a 26.6% fall at Montego Bay. The growth was broad-based but uneven: Guadalajara, Mexico’s second city, surged 13.2%, and Tijuana rose 7.2%, reflecting strong cross-border demand. In contrast, the resort airports of Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos fell 12.1% and 6.9% respectively, a sign that some beach destinations are losing momentum even as business and nearshoring hubs gain.

OMA, which operates 13 airports in northern and central Mexico, also reported a 3.9% increase for July 2026. Its mix was healthier, with international traffic up 7.5% and domestic up 3.3%. OMA’s network, which includes Monterrey, a major industrial hub, appears to be benefiting from sustained manufacturing activity and cross-border travel, though the group did not disclose an exact passenger count in its preliminary report.

What the divergence says about Mexican air travel

The July data suggest that Mexican airport traffic is no longer moving in lockstep. ASUR’s dependence on Cancún and Caribbean routes leaves it exposed to shifts in US leisure demand and airline capacity decisions, while GAP and OMA are riding different currents. Guadalajara’s double-digit growth and Tijuana’s steady rise point to a structural shift towards business travel, logistics and cross-border commuting, particularly as companies relocate supply chains closer to the US.

At the same time, the weakness at Puerto Vallarta and Los Cabos, both GAP-operated, is a reminder that even within a growing portfolio, individual markets can diverge sharply. The 26.6% collapse at Montego Bay, Jamaica, one of GAP’s overseas operations, further complicates the picture, though Kingston’s 2.9% gain offers some offset. For analysts, the takeaway is that single-month, single-group figures are increasingly unreliable as a proxy for national tourism health.

Outlook: fragmentation is the new normal

Looking ahead, the July 2026 results reinforce a broader trend: Mexican airport traffic is becoming more fragmented by region and route. Domestic travel appears resilient, as OMA’s 3.3% domestic growth and GAP’s strong Guadalajara numbers indicate, but international leisure flows are more volatile. ASUR’s decline, combined with GAP’s resort airport losses, suggests that US tourists may be reallocating spending or facing capacity cuts on certain routes.

For the rest of the summer season, much will depend on airline scheduling and whether carriers restore capacity to struggling destinations. The groups themselves have not issued revised guidance, and the exact passenger totals for GAP and OMA remain undisclosed in their preliminary statements. What is clear is that investors and policymakers should treat Mexican airport traffic as a mosaic, not a monolith, with each operator’s network telling a different story about the country’s evolving travel economy.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did ASUR’s traffic fall while GAP and OMA rose?

ASUR’s network is heavily weighted towards Cancún and Caribbean leisure routes, which saw softer demand in July 2026. GAP and OMA benefited from stronger business travel and cross-border flows, particularly at Guadalajara, Tijuana and Monterrey.

What were the exact passenger figures for GAP and OMA in July 2026?

The preliminary reports did not disclose exact consolidated passenger counts for either group. GAP reported a 3.9% increase in total terminal traffic at its Mexican airports, while OMA reported a 3.9% increase across its 13 airports, with no absolute figure provided.

Does the July data signal a broader slowdown in Mexican tourism?

Not necessarily. The mixed results suggest a rebalancing rather than a collapse. Domestic traffic and business-oriented hubs are growing, while some beach destinations are losing ground. The overall picture is one of divergence, not uniform decline.
