This guide shows what the ministry did in 2025 and 2026 and which 2027 dates follow from the calendar. It also lists what US visitors should check before booking.

What the Dominican Carnival Is

The Dominican carnival is the country’s biggest street party, and the tourism ministry’s site names it, with Christmas, the most festive time of year. Each town stages its own version, with masked characters, homemade costumes and marching groups called comparsas.

The Ministry of Culture calls the national parade the most crowded popular celebration in the country. In 2026 the Dominican carnival parade drew about 180 comparsas and more than 9,000 performers.

Dominican Carnival in La Vega and Santiago

La Vega, a city in the central north, holds the Carnaval Vegano. The ministry says its celebrations run every Sunday in February and end with a big parade on 27 February, Independence Day.

February 2027 has four Sundays: 7, 14, 21 and 28 February. Saturday 27 February 2027 is Independence Day, so the final parade could shift, and no 2027 schedule has been published.

Santiago de los Caballeros, the main city of the northern Cibao region, holds its own carnival in Parque Central. In 2026 the culture minister attended the second outing there on Sunday 15 February, and it names the traditional lechón as the city’s signature character.

The National Parade in Santo Domingo

The Desfile Nacional de Carnaval, the national carnival parade, fills the seafront avenue called the Malecón in Santo Domingo. It was held on Sunday 23 March 2025 and Sunday 15 March 2026, so March is the month to watch in 2027.

Nothing for 2027 has been announced, and plans do change. In April 2025 the ministry said the 2026 parade would honor Río San Juan, but in February 2026 it announced Puerto Plata instead.

The ministry announced the 2026 date on 4 February 2026, 39 days ahead. If it follows that pattern, the 2027 date may appear only in the first weeks of February.

What Happened at the 2026 Parade

The 2026 parade honored the northern province of Puerto Plata and its taimáscaro, a masked character created in 1991 whose costume carries sea shells. Guest groups came from Pasto in Colombia, Rio de Janeiro’s samba schools, Ghana and the Playa de Ponce carnival in Puerto Rico.

The ministry named a photographer, Mariano Hernández, and a broadcaster, Zoila Luna, as king and queen of the parade. The grand prize went to a group called Carnaval Intergaláctico Villa María, announced at an awards ceremony on 23 June 2026.

Getting to the Parade and Staying Safe

For 2026 the ministry deployed more than 900 military, police and public-order members plus more than 300 rescue workers. It set up eight first-aid posts and two tents for lost children near the Malecón.

Avenida George Washington, the seafront road, closed from 10 p.m. on Friday 13 March 2026 between Avenida Máximo Gómez and Calle Palo Hincado. A wider closure ran from midnight Saturday until 5 a.m. on Monday 16 March.

The ministry banned firearms, knives, animals, glass bottles, cans and kites called chichiguas at the 2026 parade. The ministry sets the rules again in each year’s notice.

The US State Department rates the Dominican Republic Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, and says violent crime is a concern throughout the country. It adds that resort areas are better policed than cities such as Santo Domingo, and our safety guide explains the main risks.

Flights, Entry Rules and Holidays

Aerodom, which runs Santo Domingo’s main airport, said on 14 October that airlines added winter seats from US cities such as Fort Lauderdale and Philadelphia. Our winter flights report has the details, and schedules can still change.

US tourists can currently enter on a passport that is valid only for their stay, but that waiver ends on Thursday 31 December 2026. Our passport rule guide explains that no decision on 2027 has been announced.

The Ministry of Labour calls Independence Day, 27 February, a fixed holiday that is never moved to another day. Good Friday, which falls on Friday 26 March 2027, is also fixed in its 2026 calendar, so offices will be closed.

Its 2027 calendar is not out yet, and our holidays guide covers the dates before it. Our Santo Domingo city page lists the capital’s neighborhoods for longer stays.

What It Means for You

Book refundable flights and rooms until the ministry announces the 2027 Dominican carnival dates. La Vega and Santiago offer four February Sundays to choose from, and Santo Domingo is the March date to watch.

Follow the ministry’s website and its social account, @miculturard, which its 2025 notice named for parade information. Arrive early on parade day, carry no glass or cans, and agree a meeting point with your group.

Prices for rooms and seats are not published, and the ministry’s notices mention no tickets. If a seller offers parade seats in 2027, ask for written proof that the ministry authorized the sale.

What Is Not Known

The ministry has not announced the 2027 Dominican carnival parade date, the province it will honor, the start time or any ticket rules. For 2025 it published a start time of 2 p.m., and no start time for 2027 exists yet.

The ministry has published no 2027 schedule for La Vega or Santiago, and the final La Vega parade may not fall on 27 February. No 2027 passport decision, hotel price data or crowd estimate has been announced either.

Check cultura.gob.do in January and February 2027 before you commit to any date. Any other site that lists exact 2027 Dominican carnival dates is guessing.
