A $150 million contract for a single vessel rarely makes headlines outside the oil and gas industry. But Norway’s DOF Group says its new four-year deal with Petrobras for the RSV Skandi Commander is precisely the kind of quiet, technical investment that keeps Brazil’s offshore production running smoothly.

DOF announced the award on December 30, describing it as the result of a competitive tender and the latest in a series of long-duration RSV contracts.

The Skandi Commander contract follows six other four-year RSV deals previously disclosed by the company, pointing to a sustained demand cycle rather than a one-off purchase.

An RSV is not a standard supply ship. It is a subsea support platform designed to deploy underwater robotics to inspect and work on critical equipment on the seabed—pipelines, valves, manifolds, and connections that link wells to producing units.

DOF Expands Brazil Operations with Subsea Deal

When those systems need inspection, repair, or verification, production reliability and safety depend on the speed and precision of subsea operations.

What sets this contract apart, DOF says, is the integration of two different kinds of underwater machines: a traditional remotely operated vehicle (ROV), tethered to the ship and piloted in real time, and an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), capable of running survey missions with less direct control.

In practical terms, the AUV can map large areas efficiently, while the ROV performs close-up intervention tasks—an approach that can reduce the time required to understand what is happening underwater and act on it.

The start date—January 2027—also signals planning discipline. DOF has indicated that Brazil-related programs and extensions push activity into 2027.

The company’s leadership has framed Brazil as central to its growth, noting that Brazil-related tenders across subsea and towing support added more than $2 billion to backlog in 2025. The milestone also marks 19 years of operating in the country.
