Digital nomads benefit from favorable exchange rates in Argentina, leaving locals at disadvantage

Argentina has implemented a monetary policy benefiting digital nomads and foreigners, by offering them a better currency conversion rate from U.S. dollars to Argentine pesos than the locals receive.

Nicknamed the “foreign tourist dollar”, this scheme was introduced in response to the influx of tech workers attracted by Argentina’s cheaper lifestyle following the peso’s depreciation.

Now, foreigners with international bank accounts can receive over double the number of pesos compared to locals for the same amount of dollars, bypassing the need to navigate the black market.

However, Argentinians feel this widens the existing economic disparity, while local businesses report no significant benefits due to the delay in processing international card payments.

This policy is part of Argentina’s strategy to retain U.S. dollars within the country, which is crucial for import payments and foreign debt interest payments.
