Copper prices rose notably on the COMEX exchange, reaching approximately $5.93 per pound this morning, up about 1% from yesterday.

The upward movement primarily responds to continued market speculation regarding a potential 50% U.S. tariff on imported copper, effective August 1.

Trading volumes on COMEX surged to roughly 51,300 contracts yesterday, indicating strong market engagement ahead of tariff implementations.

Copper has experienced a substantial price increase throughout July due to buyers rushing to secure supplies before potential disruptions. Notably, major copper producers reported robust quarterly results yesterday, adding momentum to the price surge.

Freeport-McMoRan reported strong second-quarter earnings driven by an average copper price of $4.54 per pound, exceeding market expectations.

Similarly, Canada’s Teck Resources announced better-than-anticipated profits and confirmed stable production forecasts despite global price volatility.

In Chile, a significant global copper supplier, the government raised its annual copper price forecast to $4.28 per pound from $4.26. This adjustment reflects market uncertainty driven by production challenges, especially from the Collahuasi mine, one of the world’s largest.

The London Metal Exchange (LME) spot price showed modest growth at around $4.47 per pound, underscoring the widening gap between U.S. and international copper markets.

This divergence comes from intensified demand within the U.S., partly attributed to tariff-related anticipations. Technical indicators support continued bullish momentum in copper pricing.

On daily charts, prices remain above both the 50-day and 200-day moving averages, reinforcing an upward trend. However, the Relative Strength Index (RSI) reached 79, signaling potential short-term overbought conditions and a possible corrective pullback.

The MACD indicator also confirms bullish sentiment but suggests slowing momentum, reflecting in the narrowing histogram. Similarly, Bollinger Bands indicate heightened volatility, with prices nearing the upper band.

The Global Liquidity Index NDQ, depicted in yellow, indicates significant liquidity flowing into copper markets, validating the upward price movement. Volume analysis further supports this bullish sentiment, with recent spikes confirming strong buying interest.

Despite technical caution signs, overall market fundamentals—primarily tariff fears, limited production, and healthy global demand—continue to underpin copper’s robust market position.

As August approaches, traders will closely monitor official tariff clarifications from the U.S., Chilean production data, and ETF fund movements for further market direction.
