Colombian Stocks and Peso Surge in Eventful Week: Clear Trends, High Volatility

In the past week, Colombia’s main stock market index, the COLCAP, rose sharply to close at 1,802.78, a move confirmed by official trading charts.

This marks a gain of nearly 2% over seven days and places the index close to five-year highs. At the same time, the Colombian peso steadily appreciated, with the US dollar falling from around 4,090 COP to nearly 4,041 COP.

This market optimism did not come out of nowhere. Colombia’s economy has shown real strength in recent months. Official figures report rising demand at home and higher export volumes, mainly in coffee and gold, key sources of foreign currency for the country.

Most analysts agree this drove both rising stock prices and a stronger peso, even as inflation remains an issue and the central bank kept interest rates unchanged.

Technical analysis of the charts supports this story. The COLCAP stayed well above its main moving averages—signals of steady buying from big investors.

Momentum increased, with the index’s RSI indicator shooting up above 70, a classic sign that the market may have gone up too far, too quickly. Bollinger Bands on the charts grew wider all week, showing both fast gains and higher risks.

Meanwhile, trading volumes in shares of leading banks, infrastructure companies, and large exporters all increased, reflecting real money entering the market.

On currencies, the peso’s gains were no accident. The US dollar’s steady drop below its own key averages signaled persistent buying of Colombia’s currency. The technical charts show momentum in the peso’s favor, but also warn that the move may have been overdone for now.

Behind these moves, Colombia’s improving trade performance and the resilience of its companies provided solid support—official economic reports back this up. Yet, risks remain clear.

Signs of “overbought” conditions suggest the rally may pause or reverse in the coming days, especially as investors are starting to notice wilder swings in global capital flows, seen in the more volatile Global Liquidity Index.

The week’s winners included top financials and exporters able to benefit from favorable market and economic conditions. Losers were limited mainly to companies where investors took recent profits, rather than any sudden bad news.

In sum, Colombia’s financial markets outpaced most regional peers this week, underpinned by real domestic and export demand and solid economic fundamentals.

However, the scale and speed of the rally mean investors should stay cautious; the groundwork is solid, but corrections are now a growing risk.
