Colombian Peso and Stocks Stand Still as Markets Weigh Debt and Dollar Surge
The Colombian peso has traded near 4,098 to the U.S. dollar, barely moving as traders face new uncertainties. Colombia’s main stock index, the COLCAP, hovered at 1,752 after days of heavy trading and a run of impressive gains.
This pause follows the government’s announcement of a wider budget gap, confirmed by officials raising the country’s 2025 inflation projection from 4.4 to 4.7 percent.
That signals deeper fiscal stress and sends a warning to investors: more debt and higher inflation could become a new norm. The government stepped in, launching a buyback for international bonds to calm nerves, but the market reaction stayed muted.
At the same time, the U.S. dollar index edged up, continuing a steady climb that began in July. This broader dollar strength made investors even more cautious and drove foreign funds to pull money from Colombian equity ETFs last week.

As hopes for continued international inflows faded, trading in Colombian stocks slowed and price swings shrank. Technical analysis of both the COLCAP and USD/COP charts shows a market losing steam.
On daily COLCAP charts, the RSI stayed above 66, a level often followed by a pullback as buyers tire. The index also reached the upper part of its Bollinger Band, suggesting it might need to cool off after its rally.
On the currency side, the hourly peso-dollar chart shows low volume along with an RSI near 34, which can mean the peso is oversold—but with little fresh demand, there is no strong bounce.
Support and resistance lines on the charts show that traders remain reluctant to push prices in either direction, waiting for a clear reason to act.

The Global Liquidity Index NDQ, marked in yellow, fell steeply last week and then stabilized, signaling that there is less money available for riskier assets like the Colombian peso and local stocks.
Without a rise in liquidity or a sign of fiscal relief, the market’s sideways grind looks set to continue. All this means Colombia’s financial story now hinges on tough fiscal choices and global conditions—especially dollar movements and investor confidence in emerging markets.
The market holds its breath, hoping for direction, but solid facts show that only real policy changes or a major shift in global appetite will move the needle. Until then, caution rules both peso and equity trading across Colombia’s markets.
