Mexico’s Peso and Equities Endure Rate Cut and Trade Questions in Subdued Week

In the week ending August 11, 2025, Mexico’s markets moved carefully through a maze of global and domestic events. The central bank, Banco de México, lowered its main interest rate by 25 basis points to 7.75% after headline inflation slowed to 3.51% in July.

This decision signaled hope for economic relief, yet officials warned that persistent core inflation and external uncertainty—especially pressure from the United States—limit how far rates can fall.

Technical chart patterns confirm the stock market’s hesitancy. The index stayed above a major support of 57,900 and its long-term average, but momentum indicators showed little conviction for a fresh rally. Volatility indicators tightened, matching the week’s lack of direction.

Beyond domestic news, international cash flows to Mexican markets slowed. The Global Liquidity Index, drawn from the charts, slipped lower—meaning fewer dollars from abroad reached Mexican assets, putting added pressure on both markets and policymakers.

Behind the surface, the story is one of resilience against headwinds. Lower inflation finally gave Banxico room to cut rates, but the relief was muted by outside trade risks and shrinking foreign interest.

For local firms, it meant holding their ground rather than breaking out. For investors, it required caution as neither fresh optimism nor deep fear took hold. Technical supports held, but the search for a catalyst continues.
