Chile’s Immigrant Population Reaches 8.7%

The 2022 National Socioeconomic Characterization Survey (Casen) reveals 1.73 million immigrants live in Chile.

They make up 8.7% of the total population. Compared to last year, these numbers show a significant rise.

This increase reverses the stagnant trend observed in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.In terms of growth, the number of immigrants increased by 400,000 since 2020.

Another way to look at it: the count is 250,000 higher than the National Institute of Statistics’ 2021 estimates. Back in 2013, only 2.3% of Chile’s population were immigrants.

Currently, 11.1% of these immigrants live below the poverty line. This data comes from an analysis by Libertad y Desarrollo.

Most immigrants, or 65%, live in the Metropolitan Region.

The northern Macrozone areas also have fewer immigrants but a higher ratio in the general population. In Tarapacá, for example, 17.5% of residents are foreigners.

By nationality, 49% are Venezuelans. This is a big jump from just 2% in 2013. Next, 14% are Peruvians and 12% are Colombians.

The remaining 25% come from various other countries.

Back in March 2023, 82% of Chileans assured that the presence of immigrants in the country is excessive.

However, the majority confessed never having had a bad experience with them, according to a survey by the Catholic University.

The topic of immigration has a long history in Chile. For decades, the nation has been a destination for people seeking better lives.

Initially, the flow was mostly from neighboring South American countries. In recent years, however, the demographic has diversified, including a noticeable influx from Venezuela.
