Brazilian Stocks Defy Global Trends as Ibovespa Extends Winning Streak

According to B3 Stock Exchange figures released Thursday evening, the Brazilian stock market continued to ignore global turmoil as the Ibovespa index gained 0.25% to close at 123,357.55 points.

This resilience marks another solid performance while Wall Street plunged on trade policy uncertainty. The Brazilian real held steady with the dollar closing at R$5.7597, nudging up just 0.06%.

This stability contrasted sharply with the selloff that hammered US markets amid confusion over President Trump’s tariff policies. Méliuz shares skyrocketed 29% after the company announced a strategic pivot to Bitcoin.

The fintech invested R$24.6 million ($4.1 million) to purchase 45.72 BTC at an average price of $90,296 per coin. CEO Israel Salmen positioned this move as a hedge against Brazil’s persistent inflation and high taxation on traditional investments.

Natura led gains among Ibovespa constituents following JP Morgan’s bullish outlook on the cosmetics giant. Analysts highlighted the upcoming Avon separation as a significant catalyst for future growth. The positive assessment helped Natura recover all its 2025 losses.

Embraer extended its upward momentum after Wednesday’s 9% surge. The aircraft manufacturer strengthened its position in Mexico through a new partnership with Fly Across MRO to expand executive jet services across Latin America.

Brazil’s Market Dynamics

The oil sector suffered notable losses during the session. Petrobras fell more than 1%, recording its eighth consecutive negative day. The state-controlled oil company’s market value tumbled to R$461 billion ($76.8 million), reaching its lowest level since December 2023.

Brava Energia declined for the second straight day after announcing the sale of onshore assets in Bahia. XP Investimentos analyst Regis Cardoso explained that this move eliminated speculation about a larger sale of the company’s entire onshore operation.

Wall Street indices posted significant losses Thursday. The Dow Jones dropped 0.99%, the S&P 500 fell 1.78%, and the Nasdaq plummeted 2.61%. Trump postponed tariffs on Mexican and Canadian goods until April 2 following talks with Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Brazil’s market divergence reflects shifting global investment patterns. Foreign investors have injected R$8.7 billion ($1.45 million) into Brazilian equities in early 2025, reversing last year’s record outflows. Brazilian stocks gained 9.4% in dollar terms through February, outperforming both global and emerging markets.

Market analysts point to Brazil’s attractive valuations and improving fundamentals as key factors drawing international capital. This influx supports the Ibovespa’s resilience despite external pressures from US monetary policy uncertainty and commodity price volatility.
