Brazilian Senator’s U.S. Trip Pits Parliament Against Supreme Court in Rare Legal Showdown
Brazilian Senator Marcos do Val flew to the United States in July 2025, even though Brazil’s Supreme Federal Court (STF) had banned him from leaving the country.
The Court, led in this case by Justice Alexandre de Moraes, had ordered all of do Val’s passports seized in 2024.
The order came while investigators looked into claims that he tried to intimidate Federal Police officers involved in high-profile cases tied to the January 2023 unrest in Brasília.
Despite the ban, do Val used a valid diplomatic passport to travel and shared his journey openly online. He stated that his diplomatic status and visas were valid, which Brazilian government records confirm.
However, court documents make clear he did not have approval to travel abroad and had been told so days before the trip.
Following his departure, the Supreme Federal Court froze the bank accounts of do Val and his daughter. The Court also blocked his access to credit cards and digital payment systems.

Additionally, social media platforms restricted his accounts after receiving orders from Brazilian authorities, sparking a standoff with the owner of X, who resisted some of the demands.
Do Val claims parliamentary immunity protects him, saying he is being punished for his work as a senator.
The Supreme Court, however, argues that elected officials are not above the law and cannot undermine investigations or incite unrest.
This high-profile dispute shows how Brazil’s courts, government, and political class are deeply at odds over the limits of judicial power and the rights of lawmakers.
